Amy Grant and Vince Gill say their relationship grew out of a musical friendship that began years before they became a couple. They met in the 1990s, collaborated repeatedly, and married in March 2000—after each had divorced a first spouse. In a 2024 retrospective interview, they reflected on the public judgment they faced and on building a blended family through respect and forgiveness.
How Grant and Gill first met and became friends
Grant recalled meeting Gill at a performance for troops at Fort Campbell. By Christmas 1993, they were working together, and recurring holiday performances gave them opportunities to spend time as friends. In a 2003 interview with Larry King, Grant described the ease of their connection: “if I were a guy, we would have been best friends. We would have been running buddies.” Gill remembered that “Everything felt familiar” and “the hang was easy, the conversation was easy.” The CNN transcript is labeled a rush transcript, so its wording may be incomplete or subject to revision. Their connection was musical as well as social. ABC News identifies Gill as Grant’s duet partner on the title track of her album House of Love. ABC News’s 2003 interview coverage provides that musical context.
When they became a couple—and when they married
A 2024 interview by Nancy Kruh reports that Gill and his first wife, Janis Oliver, divorced in 1997. Grant and her first husband, Gary Chapman, separated in December 1998 and finalized their divorce the following June. Grant confirmed that she and Gill were dating four months later; the interview dates their relationship as a couple to 1999. They married in March 2000. These are dates reported in the couple’s retrospective account, rather than independent documentation of every private event. Read the 2024 interview.

The timeline does not establish that their relationship caused either earlier marriage to end. In their earlier account, they described the initial connection as friendship, and Gill said rumors about them circulated before they were a couple. Their own recollections distinguish that period of collaboration from the later relationship.
How they responded to public judgment
Gill said that people assumed the worst about them and that those assumptions were painful. In the 2024 interview, he recalled: “What was painful was most people assumed the worst of us, and it was not fair, and it was incorrect. You couldn’t go back and undo what people said, and what people thought … Sadly, it’s human nature in a way to assume the worst. It couldn’t have been further from the truth.” His words describe how he experienced public reaction; they should not be treated as independent proof of claims about private events.

Grant and Gill’s daughter Corrina was born in 2001. Gill said her birth helped bring their blended family together. In Kruh’s 2024 interview, Grant reflected on what she called “grace and forgiveness” for one another and for their first and second families. She added: “It’s possible to reconcile. It’s possible to mend fences. It might not be in the context of original relationships, but it’s possible to find your way in life with respect.”
Grant also framed the path they took as uncertain rather than simple or perfectly resolved: “Life is full of all kinds of mysteries.” Her account emphasizes making a life with respect across changing family relationships, not erasing the past or claiming that every relationship can return to its original form.
