Amber Tamblyn said she was excited to play Jenny Harper and helped shape her from the start. She was drawn to Jenny’s wildness and uncertain moral compass, and imagined a woman who could be tough and unapologetic while embracing both masculine and feminine qualities. Those are Tamblyn’s own remarks about the role—not a claim about her private feelings beyond what she shared publicly.
Tamblyn was excited by the part—and had a clear idea for Jenny
“The minute I read the material, I was in,” Tamblyn told TVLine in 2013. She said she had a strong view of the character and went in to present her idea of who Jenny should be.

Tamblyn’s concept blended qualities that sitcoms often treat as opposites: Jenny would be masculine and feminine at once, laugh heartily, be open to new experiences, and remain tough. Tamblyn summed up her vision as “a sort of unapologetic, tough heroine.”
Jenny’s wildness was part of the appeal
Speaking to Parade, Tamblyn said Jenny’s lack of a settled moral compass was fun to play. “I love that she doesn’t really have a moral compass, that I know of yet. Her compass is broken,” she said. She described Jenny as “just sort of out there and wild and enjoying herself,” adding that it was enjoyable to play someone with “no regard in that sense.”

That portrayal also touched on a type of character Tamblyn had wanted to play. She told Parade she had long wanted to take on someone with “a little bit of her energy,” a tomboy with dark lipstick and a tough demeanor alongside a feminine side. Jenny, she said, came close to that ambition.
Tamblyn saw a chance to challenge a sitcom cliché
Jenny is gay, and Tamblyn welcomed the chance to play a gay character on a mainstream television sitcom. She called it “really awesome” and described having a character who was “completely the opposite of a cliché” as “quite a feminist statement,” particularly in a genre where she felt female characters were often clichéd.

Jenny’s family connection invited comparisons with Charlie
The show introduced Jenny in the season 11 premiere as Charlie Harper’s previously unknown daughter. Contemporary TV Guide coverage described her arrival at the home of Walden Schmidt and Alan Harper and noted behavior reminiscent of her father. That resemblance was part of the character’s setup; it is distinct from Tamblyn’s own account of how she wanted to play Jenny.
Tamblyn also spoke about the show’s bawdy humor and its live-audience format in a CBS/AP interview. She said the jokes, language, and euphemisms could surprise her, calling the role “very fun to play.” On performing before a studio audience, she praised Jon Cryer and Ashton Kutcher, saying the format required “a certain type of muscle memory” and that watching them work was a pleasure.

What her comments establish
Tamblyn’s public remarks point to enthusiasm for the material and for the opportunity to build a specific kind of character: unruly, open to experience, tough, and not confined to a single gender presentation. Her comments describe what she enjoyed and the performance she aimed for; they do not establish how she felt privately beyond those statements.
