The episode also ended with an “in loving memory” card for actor Kamar de los Reyes.
How Coach Montes’s story ended
Montes does not appear on-screen in “Mass Appeal.” Instead, the episode reveals that he has accepted an NFL job and will leave Coastal California College. Asher, who had grown close to Montes, initially avoids saying goodbye. After Montes’s wife delivers a parting gift, Asher answers the coach’s call and they share a final conversation by phone. The episode closes with a memorial card for de los Reyes. TVLine’s June 3, 2024 recap describes the installment and its tribute.
Which episode is the tribute?
The aired installment is Season 6, Episode 10, “Mass Appeal,” which TVLine identifies as the tribute episode. Before the season aired, showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll described the planned tribute as being in “episode 6” in a BlackFilmandTV.com interview. That advance episode reference differs from the broadcast designation in contemporaneous coverage; for the episode as aired, use Season 6, Episode 10.
Why the goodbye carried personal meaning
De los Reyes died in Los Angeles on December 24, 2023, aged 56, after a brief battle with cancer. The Associated Press reported that he was filming All American at the time of his death.

The series had shown Montes in the Season 6 premiere, then kept the character off-screen without an explanation until the tribute episode, according to TVLine. The story’s eventual NFL-job explanation gave the character a departure without depicting de los Reyes on-screen.
The phone call also echoed a real relationship. Cody Christian, who plays Asher, said de los Reyes had been a mentor to him during a difficult period; they would talk after filming, and Christian relied on him. Christian told TVLine, “Kamar was acting as a real-life coach for me many, many, many times.”

Before Season 6, Carroll said the show would honor de los Reyes, his family, and what he meant to the series with a tribute to both the actor and his character. Her published wording refers to him as “Kamal” in the phrase “a proper tribute to both his character and to Kamal himself in episode 6.” That is the wording in the interview; it should not be silently treated as the aired episode number, which contemporaneous coverage identifies as Episode 10.
