Ahmed Ali’s 1940 novel Twilight in Delhi makes private sorrow echo across a changing city. Asghar’s longing for Bilqeece and Mir Nihal’s memories and grief give the story its intimate losses; Delhi’s sounds, verse and sensory life widen them into an elegy for a way of living. Yet the novel is not simply a lament for a culture presumed to have vanished: its Urdu poetic inheritance complicates that reading.

What happens in Twilight in Delhi?

Set in Old Delhi between 1911 and 1919, the novel follows the Nihal family. Its emotional focus moves between Asghar’s love for Bilqeece and Mir Nihal’s memories as the world around him changes. The family’s experience gives Ali a way to bring private feeling and the city’s transformation into the same frame.

How does romantic longing become an elegy?

Asghar’s desire is not presented as uncomplicated fulfillment. The novel’s line, “To be loved is sweet, he thought, whereas to love is full of sorrow and grief and pain,” casts love as a condition of vulnerability. Scroll.in attributes the thought to Asghar; wording can vary across editions and translations, so readers quoting it should check the edition in hand.

That inward ache resonates with Mir Nihal’s grief and recollection. The novel links the pain of attachment to the experience of living through change: what one loves may be difficult to hold, whether it is a person, a familiar routine or a remembered city. Ali’s elegy therefore works through feeling rather than a simple catalogue of losses.

How does Delhi’s sound and poetry shape the mood?

The city is more than a backdrop. Songs, verse, distant singers and sensory description give its daily life a presence that readers can hear and feel. Poetic epigraphs and the novel’s lyrical texture help make the atmosphere mournful without reducing it to abstract commentary.

Alex Padamsee’s scholarship places Urdu poetry at the center of the novel’s poetics. His article abstract argues that Ali’s Urdu writerly location and sustained engagement with Urdu poetry challenge both the priority given to realism and the apparent narrative of Muslim cultural extinction. This offers a useful counterweight to reading the book only as nostalgia: its literary form is part of how it remembers and interprets a culture.

Is the novel a historical record of Delhi?

Twilight in Delhi represents a particular experience of colonial urban change through the Nihal family and the novel’s literary choices. That makes it valuable as a work of cultural memory, but not a neutral account of the city’s history. Its elegiac perspective is an interpretation shaped by character, language and form; claims about events beyond the novel require historical evidence in their own right.

Ahmed Ali described his aim in writing the book as depicting “a phase of our national life and the decay of a whole culture,” in words from his introduction to the 1993 edition as reported by Scroll.in. That statement helps explain the novel’s elegiac ambition, but it should not settle its meaning: Padamsee’s reading shows why the work resists being reduced to a straightforward account of cultural extinction.

Where to start reading

The novel itself is the most direct way to encounter Ali’s treatment of longing, memory and Delhi. Google Books lists a 1994 New Directions edition of Twilight in Delhi; that bibliographic record does not establish current stock, formats or prices.
