Agatha All Along made its witchcraft feel tangible by putting real sets, water, fire and physical effects in front of the cast—then using visual effects to create the magic, extend the environments and stage moments that could not be captured practically. Its look is best understood as a hybrid craft approach, not a production made without CGI.
Why the show leaned into practical craft
Creator and showrunner Jac Schaeffer said the creative team wanted the series’ earth-connected witchcraft to feel touchable rather than “CG or ephemeral.” She recalled that Kevin Feige was excited about the practical side, and that classic practical-effects films helped shape the intended texture. As she put it to Disney, “We wanted it to feel like it was something you could touch, that felt real rather than CG or ephemeral.” (The Walt Disney Company)
Schaeffer described the early brief in a separate interview as, “This is not a CGI show.” That expressed an aesthetic priority, not a promise that the series would avoid digital effects. In practice, physical elements gave performers something concrete to respond to, while compositing and digital extensions completed images beyond the reach of a set. What the actors could experience on set
The Witches’ Road
The cast walked on an actual Witches’ Road rather than performing every scene against an imagined location. Schaeffer said she could not quantify what that did for the performances, but the physical environment was part of the production’s effort to make the journey feel real. (The Walt Disney Company)

Water and fire
Actor Sasheer Zamata said the kitchen flood in episode 3 used real water and the fire in episode 4 was real. She recalled that the effects team worked out how to produce the needed light on set, and that being physically present in the environment helped the actors. Those examples describe particular scenes; they do not mean every effect in the series was practical. (Marie Claire)
How the digital magic was made
Digital Domain’s account of its work, published November 13, 2024, shows how the production paired physical reference and digital craft. The vendor developed a distinct color for each witch’s magic: Agatha’s purple, Teen’s blue, Rio’s green, Alice’s orange, Lilia’s yellow and Jennifer’s pink. Artists created the beams through 2D compositing in Nuke, then added practical elements and hand-animated details to give the energy a deliberately old-school feel. Digital Domain summarized one part of the process this way: “The team augmented the beams generated in Nuke with tesla coil footage and other practical elements.” (Digital Domain)

The desiccation effects also used more than one method. Digital Domain described a 3D approach for the principal characters; for many other witches, it adapted a shared digital head asset to individual faces with compositing and 3D enhancement. That combination let the effects team handle a large group while tailoring the result to different characters. (Digital Domain)
How the broom chase combined sets and VFX
The broom sequence began with a substantial practical foundation: an elaborate forest set inspired by the speeder-bike chase in Return of the Jedi. Drones captured 180-degree array footage for backgrounds, and performers were filmed individually on blue screen while suspended in harnesses. Animation and compositing placed them into a digitally extended forest matched to the set; the vendor says some composites used eight to ten individual plates. (Digital Domain)

For the flight above the treetops beneath the blood moon, the crew used a different blend of old and new techniques: a painted glass backdrop established the view, while miniature puppets dressed as the characters were photographed on miniature brooms against blue screen. The sequence’s handmade appearance therefore came from a mix of physical imagery, performance capture and digital assembly—not from one technique alone. (Digital Domain)
Costumes and sets helped tell the story
The practical sensibility extended beyond effects. Costume designer Daniel Selon said the garments contain details that may stand out on a pause or repeat viewing. He described Mrs. Hart’s floral ensembles and Agatha’s sharper, layered silhouettes, with Agatha’s coat and shirt designed to work for a long journey. Teen’s sweater includes details Selon added and, within the story, was knitted by the character. (D23)

Schaeffer also credited Selon’s wardrobe and production designer John Collins’s environments with quickly distinguishing characters and making each space capable of launching story threads. In that sense, the show’s physical craft did more than provide texture: clothing and locations carried information about character and story. (The Credits / Motion Picture Association)

Agatha All Along prioritized tangible elements where they supported performance and tone: a walkable road, real water and fire in specific scenes, a built forest, harness work, miniatures and carefully designed costumes. Digital effects then supplied color-coded magic, transformed characters, flight and forest scale. The result is not a practical-versus-CGI split; it is a production in which physical craft gave the imagery a grounded starting point and visual effects carried it further.
