How Adelaide’s After-Midnight Buses Work—and How to Plan a Trip

Adelaide’s dedicated Saturday-night bus network runs from midnight to 6 am Sunday. Here’s how to check a route, confirm stops and times, and plan around the 4 am fare change.

Adelaide’s after-midnight public transport is a Saturday-night network of dedicated buses, not an all-night extension of every regular route. The service runs from midnight Saturday to 6:00 am Sunday, and which suburbs and stops it serves depends on the route. To plan a journey, enter your exact origin and destination in Adelaide Metro’s journey planner and select a departure time within that window, then check the date-specific route timetable and any service alerts. Fare treatment also changes at 4:00 am Sunday: services before then are treated as Saturday services for peak fares.

What Adelaide’s after-midnight service is

Adelaide Metro calls the service “After midnight buses.” It operates on Saturday nights, with the service window running from midnight Saturday through 6:00 am Sunday. It is a distinct set of routes; it does not mean that ordinary daytime and evening buses continue running all night.

The published network description gives the following route distribution:

Direction Routes described by Adelaide Metro
East and hills 5
West 1
North 4
South 3

These counts describe the network, not how often buses run, how many passengers use them, or whether a particular suburb has a direct trip. The routes pass through the city’s Home Zone, but coverage is directional and route-based. Check the actual origin, destination and stops for your travel time instead of assuming a nearby suburb or stop is served.

It is useful to think of the network as a set of overnight corridors connecting the city with selected areas, rather than as a blanket replacement for the daytime map. A suburb name appearing on the map is a clue about the general direction of a route, not confirmation that every part of that suburb is covered. Similarly, seeing a route number does not establish that a bus stops close to a particular address or that the same service runs at every point in the overnight window.

The service description gives a total of 13 routes across the four directional groupings. That total should not be read as 13 separate trips available at any given time, nor as evidence of a particular interval between buses. The official service information does not publish a frequency measure in the material cited here. For a practical answer to “Can I make this trip?”, use the journey planner and timetable for the date and time you intend to travel.

How to use the network map

Adelaide Metro’s after-midnight network map, dated 26 January 2026, is useful for understanding the broad route layout and where services connect with city pickup areas. It names routes N1, N10, N21, N22, N30, N178, N202, N224, N254, N262, N502, N541, N721 and N801. The map shows routes extending toward places including Golden Grove, Wattle Park, Salisbury, Fairview Park, Mount Barker, West Lakes, Newton, Ingle Farm, Gawler, Semaphore, Aberfoyle Hub, Marion and Seaford.

Use those lines and place names as an orientation aid, not as proof that a particular stop has a bus at a particular time. A route line does not establish a stop-level departure, a convenient connection, or service for the date you plan to travel. The timetable and journey planner are needed to verify those details.

For example, if a map shows a route reaching a broad destination area, first use the planner to test the actual origin and destination rather than choosing a route from its label alone. The planner can show the suggested boarding and alighting stops and any transfer. Then check that the timetable has the corresponding stop and departure. If the map and your itinerary seem to differ in detail, use the date-specific planner and timetable to confirm what is scheduled for that trip.

Example: understanding a route description

Adelaide Metro’s timetable search describes N541 as a Saturday PM–Sunday AM service from the city to Fairview Park via the O-Bahn, Tea Tree Plaza and Hancock Road. That description helps identify the general corridor, but it cannot tell you whether N541 is the right bus for your address or the exact stop and departure you need. Check the planner and timetable for the trip itself.

This is the right way to use corridor information: it narrows down which route might be relevant, while the trip-specific result answers the operational questions. Do not treat the words “via Tea Tree Plaza” or a similar place reference as proof that every requested connection is possible, or that a particular stop will be served at the time you need.

Plan a trip in the journey planner

  1. Enter the exact endpoints. Open Adelaide Metro’s journey planner and enter the origin and destination you will actually use. If you are walking to or from a stop, use a precise address or location where possible so the suggested walk is relevant.
  2. Set a departure time in the overnight window. Choose a time between midnight Saturday and 6:00 am Sunday. Adelaide Metro specifies that this time selection is necessary to display after-midnight bus times. A result for an earlier Saturday-evening time or a later Sunday-morning time may not show the overnight service you intend to take.
  3. Inspect the complete itinerary. Check the proposed route, departure stop, scheduled departure, arrival stop and any transfer. If the planner offers more than one trip, compare total arrival time and transfer count, as well as how far you must walk to each stop.
  4. Verify the route timetable for your travel date. Adelaide Metro’s timetable search accepts route numbers and location names and provides printable PDF timetables. Confirm the exact departure and the stops shown for your journey in the current timetable; do not rely only on a map, an old screenshot or a general route description.
  5. Check service information close to departure. Review Adelaide Metro’s current disruption information and any date-specific changes before setting out. Exact departures, connections and special-event changes can differ, so a saved itinerary is not a guarantee that the service will operate unchanged.
  6. Allow time to reach the correct boarding point. If your trip starts in the CBD, identify the route’s city pickup point on the current map and make sure you are waiting at the stop named in your itinerary. Do not assume all city routes board from one shared stop.

For a trip with a transfer, check both legs rather than treating the first bus as the whole plan. The available official information does not establish a guaranteed wait or onward connection for every combination of routes. If a missed connection would leave you without a workable way to reach your destination, account for that risk when choosing between the planner’s options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It can help to separate planning into two questions. First, does the planner offer an itinerary for the origin, destination and chosen departure time? Second, does the current timetable confirm the route, stop and scheduled time you intend to use? A broad map check answers neither question on its own. The date and time matter because a route description or timetable saved from another occasion may not reflect the current schedule or a disruption.

When searching, be precise about whether the time you enter is when you want to leave or when you need to arrive; set the planner accordingly. If your intended departure is close to the start or end of the overnight service window, test that time directly rather than extrapolating from a nearby result. The published window is midnight Saturday to 6:00 am Sunday, and the official instruction is to select a time within it to display the after-midnight bus times.

Before leaving, note the route number and the names of both the boarding and alighting stops, along with the scheduled departure. If the trip has a transfer, note the second route and stop as well. This makes it easier to compare the planned journey with the timetable and to identify the right city pickup point. It does not remove the need to check live service information if a disruption or change is announced.

Choosing between trip options

When the planner returns more than one viable itinerary, compare the details that matter for your journey rather than assuming one route is always preferable:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Arrival time and transfers: Compare the scheduled arrival and number of changes. A route with fewer transfers may be easier to follow, while another may arrive sooner; use the itinerary for your date.
  • Walks to and from stops: Consider the distance and nature of the walk at both ends, not just the bus portion. The sources do not establish a universal safest route or walking condition, so assess the actual streets and locations you will use.
  • City boarding point: If boarding in the CBD, match the route’s pickup point to the current map and your planner result. The Home Zone is a useful reference, but route-specific pickup locations still matter.
  • Exact stops and times: Confirm that the timetable’s departure and arrival stops match the trip you want. A route serving the general area does not necessarily serve every stop on that corridor at your chosen time.
  • Fare window and payment: For travel around 4:00 am Sunday, check whether the trip falls before or after the published fare boundary and choose an accepted payment method.

Adelaide Metro’s published service information does not provide comparative reliability scores, typical waiting times or a basis for ranking routes on punctuality. Do not treat an unverified estimate as a usual headway or a guaranteed connection.

A shorter-looking line on the map is not necessarily the quicker option for a specific passenger. The relevant comparison is the complete trip result, including any walk to the stop, transfer, and time at the destination. Likewise, a journey with fewer changes may involve a longer walk or a different arrival time. Compare the details shown for the same travel date and choose based on the actual trip you need, not a general assumption about one direction or route.

If two options appear close, check whether they use different city boarding points or have different transfer arrangements. Make sure the walk to the stop is practical for you and that the arrival stop is suitable for the next part of your journey. Official information does not provide a standard waiting-time or punctuality comparison, so those should not be used as a reason to favour one route unless current trip information supports it.

Using the city Home Zone

The after-midnight routes pass through the Home Zone, which includes stops E1, V2, X2 and C2. Adelaide Metro’s map identifies facilities there as real-time travel information, CCTV, lighting, police patrols and toilets. These features can make the zone a helpful place to orient yourself while arranging a city boarding point or waiting for a bus.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The map also shows route-specific city pickup points and nearby landmarks. Use the stop and route information in your trip result rather than relying on the Home Zone label alone: being in the zone does not mean every route boards at every Home Zone stop.

When travelling from the city, locate the named stop before setting out and allow time to get there. “Home Zone” is a useful area reference, but it is not a single boarding bay shared by all routes. The map’s pickup points and landmarks can help you orient yourself; your itinerary and the current map together should identify where your particular route boards. If you are unsure, recheck the route number and stop name rather than relying on a remembered location.

The Home Zone facilities listed on the map are specific information about the zone. They do not establish that the same facilities are present at every stop elsewhere on the network, nor do they guarantee that a particular stop is staffed. Plan your waiting location and onward walk using the stops and route shown for your trip.

Adelaide Metro says drivers may be able to drop passengers at well-lit places along a route, such as service stations or fast-food outlets. “May” is important: this is conditional, not a promise of a custom stop or a substitute for checking where you can board and alight. If you need to request a drop-off, ask the driver and follow their direction; plan around the published stops unless a different arrangement is confirmed.

Prices and product conditions can change. Check Adelaide Metro’s live fares page before travel, and confirm that a product is available for your passenger type and journey. The listed payment methods for a regular Singletrip are a rechargeable metroCARD, Tap and Pay, or the Adelaide Metro Buy & Go app; the table does not mean every ticket type can be bought in every way.

The two-hour travel period applies to a fare for travel on the network; the stated rule is not a separate late-night fare. The fares page says fares are the same on buses, trains and trams, so the overnight service’s main fare distinction in the information cited here is the peak/off-peak classification by time. Check the live fare page for product details and conditions instead of assuming that the price table covers every passenger category.

The page lists a paper Singletrip separately from the regular metroCARD, Tap and Pay and Buy & Go app Singletrip. That distinction matters when comparing costs: at the checked prices, the paper Singletrip amount differs from the regular Singletrip amount in both peak and off-peak periods. The Daytrip and 3-Day Visitor Pass are listed as products too, but the table does not assign them separate peak and off-peak prices. Confirm current options and eligibility on Adelaide Metro’s fares page before deciding which product suits your travel.

How peak and off-peak apply overnight

For fare purposes, Adelaide Metro treats services through 4:00 am Sunday as Saturday services. Saturday is peak all day, so a service before 4:00 am Sunday falls under the Saturday peak treatment. Sunday services from 4:00 am to midnight are off-peak under the published rule. For example, the rule classifies a 1:00 am Sunday service as Saturday peak, while a service after the 4:00 am boundary falls into the Sunday off-peak period. Public holidays are off-peak all day according to the same published fare information.

The boundary concerns the scheduled service classification, not simply the fact that a passenger is travelling on a Sunday by the clock. If an itinerary crosses the boundary or you are unsure which fare applies, verify the live fare rules for the specific trip rather than assuming a ticket’s price from the calendar day alone.

For a straightforward comparison, a trip on an after-midnight bus before 4:00 am Sunday is treated as Saturday travel under the stated rule; after the boundary, Sunday off-peak treatment applies. That is why a trip at 1:00 am can be peak even though the calendar says Sunday. The boundary is particularly worth checking if you are planning a journey near 4:00 am, when the published classification changes. Confirm the current rule before travel, especially if you are comparing products or have a journey that extends across the boundary.

What to verify before leaving

  • Your journey planner search uses a time between midnight Saturday and 6:00 am Sunday.
  • The route, stop names and departure time in the current timetable match your itinerary.
  • You know the correct city pickup point if boarding in the CBD.
  • You have checked current disruption information for the travel date.
  • You have considered the walk to and from stops and any transfer shown.
  • Your ticket or payment method is suitable, and you have checked the fare treatment if travelling near 4:00 am Sunday.

A useful final check is to compare the itinerary against the actual travel date, not just the day of the week. Confirm the correct origin and destination, departure time, route and stop names; check the timetable and current service information; then make sure your payment choice fits the fare rules. If an important leg depends on a transfer, confirm that leg rather than assuming the connection is guaranteed.

What the published information does not guarantee

The official route description and map explain the network’s shape, but they do not establish service at every suburb or stop, a direct trip for every origin and destination, a particular journey duration, or an assured onward connection. The published materials cited for this guide also do not provide ridership figures, punctuality statistics, safety-outcome data or service-frequency measures. For those reasons, plan from the date-specific planner and timetable rather than inferring a frequency or reliability level from the number of routes.

The core source details are Adelaide Metro’s “Free and special services — After midnight buses” page and “Timetables” page, checked 10 October 2026; the “After Midnight network map,” dated 26 January 2026; the N541 timetable search result checked 10 October 2026; and the “Adelaide Metro fares” page checked 10 October 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Adelaide buses run all night on Saturday?

Adelaide Metro’s dedicated after-midnight service is a set of Saturday-night buses running from midnight Saturday to 6:00 am Sunday. It is not an all-night extension of every regular route, and coverage depends on the route and stop.

How do I find an after-midnight bus in Adelaide?

Enter your exact origin and destination in Adelaide Metro’s journey planner and choose a time between midnight Saturday and 6:00 am Sunday. Then confirm the route, stops and scheduled departure in the current timetable and check service information for your travel date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does every suburb have an after-midnight bus?

No such blanket coverage is stated. Adelaide Metro describes directional routes to selected areas, and a map line or suburb name does not confirm a stop-level service at a particular time. Check the planner and timetable for your actual trip.

Where do the after-midnight buses stop in the city?

The routes pass through the city Home Zone, which includes stops E1, V2, X2 and C2. The network map also identifies route-specific city pickup points, so use the stop named in your itinerary rather than assuming every route boards at each Home Zone stop.

Is a 1:00 am Sunday bus peak or off-peak?

Under Adelaide Metro’s published fare rule, services through 4:00 am Sunday count as Saturday services. Saturday is peak all day, so a 1:00 am Sunday service is treated as peak. Sunday services from 4:00 am to midnight are off-peak; check the current fare page for the applicable product and price.

How much does an Adelaide after-midnight bus fare cost?

The Adelaide Metro fares page checked on 10 October 2026 listed regular metroCARD, Tap and Pay, or Buy & Go app Singletrip fares at $4.75 peak and $2.70 off-peak. It listed paper Singletrip fares at $6.80 peak and $4.50 off-peak. Prices and product conditions can change, so confirm current fares before travel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Adelaide’s after-midnight network is made up of Saturday-night buses running midnight to 6:00 am Sunday, not universal all-night service. Plan with the journey planner inside that window, verify the route and stops in the current timetable, and use the map to find the route-specific city pickup point. If travelling around 4:00 am Sunday, check the fare rule: services before the boundary count as Saturday peak, while Sunday services from 4:00 am are off-peak under the published schedule.
