His father, Maekar, is also the father of Maester Aemon, the Targaryen whom Jon Snow meets in Game of Thrones. Egg and Aemon are brothers, making their family the clearest direct link between Dunk and Egg’s story and the later series. House of the Dragon depicts an earlier generation of the same royal dynasty.
Who is Egg?
Egg is not an ordinary boy who happens to become Ser Duncan the Tall’s squire. He is Prince Aegon Targaryen, a son of Prince Maekar and the future King Aegon V. George R. R. Martin’s announcement introduced him as a boy whose true name is hidden from the people he and Dunk meet; the later television-story guide identifies him as Aegon Targaryen. Martin’s announcement and the family-tree guide establish those details.
The name “Egg” is the familiar nickname used during his travels with Dunk, not the name by which he will be known as king. His concealed identity also explains why the story can follow a young royal moving through Westeros with a hedge knight rather than beginning as a court-centered account of a prince.
How does Egg connect to ‘Game of Thrones’?
Egg’s brother Aemon is Maester Aemon, the elderly member of the Night’s Watch whom Jon Snow encounters at Castle Black in Game of Thrones. That makes the sibling relationship the most direct character bridge between the two stories: the boy traveling with Dunk and the maester at the Wall belong to the same family generation.

The connection is not that Egg is Jon Snow’s contemporary or that the Dunk and Egg stories take place during the events of Game of Thrones. Egg’s adventures happen much earlier. Martin’s official book description says the collected Dunk and Egg novellas take place “nearly a century before the events of A Game of Thrones.” The official book page describes the collection as the first three prequel novellas.
How does the family connect to ‘House of the Dragon’?
House of the Dragon focuses on the Targaryen succession struggle known as the Dance of the Dragons, centered on Rhaenyra and Daemon’s era. Egg belongs to a later branch of the same ruling dynasty: the family-tree guide places his father Maekar among their descendants. So the connection is dynastic and generational, rather than a story about the same principal characters appearing in both series.
Rank #2
The broad sequence is straightforward: House of the Dragon shows an earlier Targaryen generation; A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows Dunk and Egg while Targaryens still rule; and Game of Thrones takes place later. TIME describes the House of the Dragon story as set 172 years before Daenerys Targaryen’s birth, giving context for how far back that series reaches relative to the later saga. TIME’s timeline explainer supplies that figure. The sources establish this relative order, but they do not provide a precise interval between the television adaptations’ timelines.
At a glance: the three stories’ place in the Targaryen timeline
| Story | Place in the chronology | Family or story focus |
|---|---|---|
| House of the Dragon | Earlier than Dunk and Egg’s adventures | The Targaryen civil-war era of the Dance of the Dragons, associated with Rhaenyra and Daemon |
| A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms | Between the earlier Targaryen conflict and Game of Thrones | Dunk and Egg; Egg is Prince Aegon, son of Maekar and brother of Aemon |
| Game of Thrones | Later; the Dunk and Egg collection is described by Martin as taking place nearly a century before A Game of Thrones | Includes Maester Aemon, Egg’s brother, whom Jon Snow meets at the Wall |
The family link in one line
Rhaenyra and Daemon’s Targaryen line leads down generations to Maekar; Maekar’s sons include Aegon V (“Egg”) and Aemon, the future Maester Aemon of Game of Thrones. That lineage is why the Dunk and Egg story sits between the Targaryen history of House of the Dragon and the later world of Game of Thrones.
