Harrenhal’s ruin began with dragonfire: during Aegon’s Conquest, Balerion burned Harren the Black and his line in the castle’s highest tower, melting and warping its black stone. The stories that followed—ghosts, fiery deaths and a curse on its owners—are part of the castle’s in-world legend, not proof that it is objectively haunted. House of the Dragon adds another layer: a 2026 account of the show’s season-three reveal gives Alys Rivers a new origin bound to Harren’s destruction, distinct from her book history.
What happened at Harrenhal?
Harrenhal stands on the north shore of the Gods Eye in the Riverlands. The book lore describes it as the largest castle in the Seven Kingdoms, built by Harren the Black, ruler of House Hoare, as a monument to his power. Its five immense black-stone towers remain bent, cracked and misshapen after the heat of dragonfire.
Harren spent forty years building the castle. The work cost thousands of captives their lives, and builders cut down weirwoods said to have been three thousand years old for beams and rafters. On the day Harren took up residence, Aegon the Conqueror attacked. Balerion burned Harren and his sons in the tallest tower, later called Kingspyre. The fire charred the castle and melted its stone; the ruin has a clear physical cause in the story’s history.
What is the curse of Harrenhal?
The curse is a belief within the story world, built around the misfortunes said to have befallen each house that held Harrenhal after Harren’s death. The Citadel’s concordance records that belief, while tales about the castle give the supposed curse a supernatural cast. The stories do not establish that an objective curse exists.

Some tales say Harren’s blood was mixed into the castle’s mortar, including the blood of children. That, too, is a lurid story rather than a confirmed detail. The record of the castle’s history instead establishes the violence of its construction and destruction; its curse belongs to the legends people tell about what came afterward.
What are Harrenhal’s ghost stories?
In the book tradition, people say fiery spirits haunt the towers. One set of stories places Harren and his sons’ ghosts in the Wailing Tower’s cellars, though the family died in Kingspyre. Other tales have them walking the halls at night, with anyone who sees them bursting into flame. Ghostly falcons are said to haunt the mews, and sleepers have reportedly been found burned.
These accounts are framed as stories and reports, not independently verified supernatural events. Their contradictions and frightening details help explain the castle’s reputation without requiring the reader to treat its haunting as fact.
Who is Alys Rivers?
Alys in the book tradition
In the book lore, Alys Rivers is associated with Harrenhal after the Dance of the Dragons and becomes known as its “witch queen.” She says she was Aemond Targaryen’s widow and claims their son is the rightful heir. TIME’s 2024 account describes her as a healer with prophetic powers. A rumor identifies her as Simon Strong’s illegitimate daughter, but that parentage is not settled fact.

Alys in the television adaptation
The television series gives Alys a different history. According to a 2026 TV Insider interview report, season three reveals that she was Harren’s wife. She survived the burning with one badly burned son, tried unsuccessfully to save him with magic, and was cursed to live forever after attempting to die alongside him. This is a screen-continuity addition, not the book account.
Showrunner Ryan Condal said the writers developed the backstory while breaking season two, with the reveal planned for season three. He described it as “a crazy story” that fit the lore of the A Song of Ice and Fire world and gave Alys “a real underlying motivation.”

What does Alys tell Daemon at Harrenhal?
