This House of the Dragon family tree follows the major Targaryen branches and their Velaryon connections through the Season 2 finale. It separates biological descent from public parentage, marriages, political factions and rival succession claims—the distinctions behind the conflict between Team Black and Team Green.
House of the Dragon family tree at a glance
This is a show-focused tree, not a genealogy of every Targaryen in Westerosi history. Names and relationships below reflect the series through the Season 2 finale; later events are not included. The outline shows parent-child links and marriages, with disputed or implied parentage identified separately.
- Jaehaerys I and Alysanne
- Their son Aemon marries Jocelyn Baratheon; their daughter is Rhaenys.
- Their son Baelon marries Alyssa; their sons are Viserys I and Daemon.
- Their daughter Saera is the grandmother of Hugh Hammer.
- Rhaenys and Corlys Velaryon
- Their children are Laenor and Laena.
- Laenor marries Rhaenyra Targaryen. They are publicly presented as the parents of Jacaerys, Lucerys and Joffrey.
- Laena marries Daemon. Their daughters are Baela and Rhaena; a third child dies with Laena during childbirth.
- Viserys I’s branch
- Viserys marries Aemma Arryn. Their surviving child is Rhaenyra; their son Baelon dies in infancy.
- Viserys later marries Alicent Hightower. Their children are Aegon II, Helaena, Aemond and Daeron.
- Rhaenyra’s later family
- Rhaenyra marries her uncle Daemon. Their children are Aegon (often distinguished as Aegon the Younger), Viserys and Visenya, who is stillborn.
- Aegon II’s family
- Aegon II marries his sister Helaena. Their twins are Jaehaerys and Jaehaera.
TIME’s family-tree guide, updated after the Season 2 finale, provides the cutoff for this overview. Earlier guides from TV Insider and Lemonly also map the central relationships.
How the succession dispute fits the family tree
Family descent, a named heir and a crowned ruler are not the same thing. Keeping those questions separate explains why the Targaryen family divides into rival camps.

- Viserys is chosen over Rhaenys. At the Great Council, Viserys is selected ahead of his cousin Rhaenys.
- Viserys names Rhaenyra his heir. He names his daughter, his first-born child, despite later having sons with Alicent.
- Aegon II is crowned after Viserys dies. Aegon is Viserys’s first-born son, but Rhaenyra’s supporters contest his rule.
Team Black, also called the Blacks, supports Rhaenyra. Team Green, or the Greens, supports Aegon II. These are political factions, not separate branches of the family tree. Warner Bros. Discovery’s official Season 2 character descriptions identify Rhaenyra as Viserys’s first-born child and named heir, and Aegon II as his first-born son.
Which children belong to which branch?
Rhaenyra, Laenor and the disputed parentage of three sons
Jacaerys, Lucerys and Joffrey are publicly presented as the children of Rhaenyra and Laenor Velaryon. The series strongly implies that Harwin Strong is their biological father. That implication is not the same as their public parentage, so the tree should show both facts rather than silently replacing one with the other.

Through Laenor, Rhaenys and Corlys are the boys’ publicly recognized grandparents. Their marriage to Daemon later makes the boys Daemon’s stepsons; they are also his great-nephews by blood, because Daemon is Rhaenyra’s uncle.
Daemon’s children with Laena and Rhaenyra
Daemon and Laena’s daughters are Baela and Rhaena. Daemon’s later marriage to Rhaenyra joins their branches: Baela and Rhaena become Rhaenyra’s stepdaughters, while Rhaenyra’s sons with Laenor become Daemon’s stepsons. Daemon and Rhaenyra have Aegon, Viserys and Visenya; Visenya is stillborn.
