Spoilers for the season-one finale, “The Black Queen.” King Viserys is dead, and Aegon II has been crowned in King’s Landing. On Dragonstone, Rhaenyra is crowned in turn, but she initially hesitates to begin a war. She sends her sons to seek allies; at Storm’s End, Luke’s mission fails and a dragon pursuit ends with Luke and Arrax dead. Daemon brings the news to Rhaenyra, closing the episode on the brink of open conflict.
What happens in “The Black Queen”?
The first-season finale follows Rhaenyra as she learns that her father, Viserys, has died and that her half-brother Aegon II has taken the throne. The episode’s title is “The Black Queen”; “Enter Queen Rhaenyra” is a recap framing, not the episode title. Randall Colburn’s Yahoo Entertainment recap details the episode’s events, also covered by Buro Malaysia.
Rhaenys brings the news to Dragonstone. Rhaenyra goes into labor, and the baby is stillborn. Amid the shock and grief, the question of who will rule becomes immediate: Aegon has been crowned in King’s Landing, while Rhaenyra’s supporters must decide whether to accept that fait accompli or defend her claim.
How does Rhaenyra become queen?
Erryk Cargyll arrives at Dragonstone carrying Viserys’s crown and pledges himself to Rhaenyra. Daemon places the crown on her head, and the assembled court bends the knee. The ceremony gives visible form to her claim, but it does not settle the succession. Aegon already holds the throne, and Rhaenyra still needs the support of other houses.

Her response is not an immediate call to attack. When Otto Hightower presents terms that would have her yield to Aegon while retaining certain titles and family claims, Rhaenyra considers them. She weighs her right to rule against the destruction a dragon war could bring. The prophecy associated with Aegon the Conqueror also informs her sense of responsibility: the crown is not only a personal prize, but a burden tied to the realm’s survival.
Why does House Velaryon support Rhaenyra?
Corlys and Rhaenys align House Velaryon with Rhaenyra. Their support matters both politically and strategically: their command of the Narrow Sea gives her side leverage over an important route. But this alliance is not enough to secure the wider backing she needs, so Rhaenyra turns to diplomacy.

Why are Jacaerys and Luke sent away?
Rhaenyra dispatches her sons as envoys to seek the support of other houses. Jacaerys and Lucerys are not simply being sent into battle; their immediate task is to carry her cause to potential allies. Luke is sent to Storm’s End, where Aemond has already been negotiating with Borros Baratheon.
Borros refuses Luke. Aemond then confronts his nephew over the eye Luke took from him years earlier. The encounter turns a diplomatic failure into a personal threat, setting up the episode’s final and most consequential sequence.

What happens to Luke and Arrax?
Luke leaves Storm’s End on Arrax as a storm gathers. Aemond pursues on Vhagar. The episode distinguishes Aemond’s apparent intention to frighten Luke from what happens next: Arrax acts against Luke’s control and attacks Vhagar, and Vhagar kills both Arrax and Luke. The outcome is fatal even though the scene does not present it as a killing Aemond deliberately ordered or set out to carry through.
That distinction matters to the story’s turn. Aemond’s pursuit grows out of anger and intimidation, but the death of a young envoy carries consequences far beyond the quarrel between two relatives. Whether the act was intended or not, Rhaenyra’s side has suffered a devastating loss at the hands of the opposing camp.

Why does the ending point toward war?
Daemon tells Rhaenyra that Luke is dead. The episode ends on her reaction, after she has tried to consider terms and gather support without rushing into a conflict that could devastate the realm. The news collapses the remaining space for diplomacy: the struggle over succession is no longer only a question of competing claims and negotiations, but also of a son killed by the rival faction.
The finale’s central tension is therefore between restraint and escalation. Rhaenyra’s crowning establishes her claim, but her early choices show hesitation about what defending it will cost. Luke’s death changes the stakes and leaves the conflict poised to become open war.

How the finale was received
Buro Malaysia reported that the finale drew 19.8 million viewers and described it as HBO’s most-watched series finale on its platform since the Game of Thrones season-eight finale. That figure and comparison are Buro’s reporting; the account does not specify the measurement window.
