No. In both the book account of the Dance of the Dragons and HBO’s House of the Dragon, people outside the publicly recognized ruling Targaryen family ride dragons. That establishes that being known as a Targaryen is not an absolute requirement; it does not establish a complete biological rule for who can form a bond.
What the book account shows
In George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, several people called dragonseeds claim dragons during the Dance of the Dragons:
| Rider | Dragon | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Hugh Hammer | Vermithor | He rides Vermithor in the Dance-era account. |
| Ulf White | Silverwing | He rides Silverwing in the Dance-era account. |
| Addam of Hull | Seasmoke | He rides Seasmoke in the Dance-era account. |
| Nettles | Sheepstealer | She rides Sheepstealer; her parentage is uncertain in the cited account. |
“Dragonseed” refers to people understood to have Targaryen ancestry outside the ruling family. That description does not mean every rider’s parentage is equally certain: Nettles is a key qualification, and her ancestry should not be stated as settled fact. The examples show dragonriders who are not publicly recognized members of House Targaryen, rather than proving that ancestry plays no part in bonding. The dragonseed account groups these riders while noting uncertainty around Nettles.
What HBO’s series shows
In Season 2 of House of the Dragon, Addam is a shipwright who becomes Seasmoke’s rider. The series depicts a successful bond, even though Addam is not presented as a publicly recognized Targaryen. That is direct evidence within the show that the public family label is not a prerequisite. HBO’s character material and coverage of the episode describe this development.

Does dragonriding require Targaryen blood?
The examples do not answer that broader question conclusively. A successful rider may have ancestry that is unknown, disputed, or not publicly acknowledged. Claims that Addam must have inherited Targaryen or other Valyrian ancestry are interpretations, not an eligibility rule explicitly established by the cited show material. The story demonstrates who rides; it does not provide a complete test for why a dragon accepts one person and not another. Published discussion of Addam’s ancestry should therefore be read as speculation where it goes beyond what the series states.
Why book and show answers should be kept separate
The show is based on Fire & Blood, but the book and television series are not interchangeable continuities. Martin describes Fire & Blood as an “imaginary history,” rather than a conventional novel; an adaptation can make its own choices about events and presentation. His official announcement makes clear that the book’s form is history-like, not a definitive exposition of every dragon-bonding rule. Martin’s announcement and the official book information provide that context.
