Hotel Mumbai is a feature drama about the 2008 siege of Mumbai’s Taj Hotel, not a documentary or a complete account of the attacks across the city. Directed by Anthony Maras, it stars Dev Patel, Armie Hammer, Nazanin Boniadi, Anupam Kher and Jason Isaacs. The film draws on real events, but some characters and story details are dramatized.
What Hotel Mumbai is about
Bleecker Street describes Hotel Mumbai as a retelling of the 2008 Taj Hotel siege. Its story follows hotel chef Hemant Oberoi and a waiter among the staff trying to protect guests as the hotel comes under attack. Anthony Maras directed the 125-minute feature, produced by Hamilton Films, Thunder Road Films and Electric Pictures. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2018.
The production company says the film was inspired by the 2009 television documentary Surviving Mumbai. That connection makes the documentary a relevant companion for viewers seeking another treatment of the events, though the production company’s statement alone does not establish its current availability.
The Taj siege was part of attacks across Mumbai
The film’s hotel-centered perspective is narrower than the historical events. In a 2008 parliamentary statement, India’s Ministry of Home Affairs said attacks took place from November 26 through November 29 and involved firing, grenades and bomb blasts at 13 locations. The statement described attackers arriving by sea and splitting into four groups, targeting Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus; Leopold Café and the Taj Hotel; the Oberoi–Trident Hotel; and Nariman House.

The Ministry reported 164 civilians and security personnel killed and 308 injured. It separately said nine attackers were killed and one was captured. These are the figures and scope in the Government of India’s 2008 statement, not a count limited to the Taj Hotel. Home Minister P. Chidambaram said: “The operations came to an end at about 8.20 a.m. on November 29, 2008.”
A 2009 U.S. Department of Justice announcement likewise described assaults by ten attackers trained by Lashkar from November 26 through November 28, naming the Taj Mahal and Oberoi hotels, Leopold Café, Chabad House and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. Its account of David Headley’s prior surveillance appears as allegations in an indictment; it should be understood as a legal allegation, not presented as an independently established finding.

Is Hotel Mumbai a true story?
The attacks and the siege at the Taj are historical; the film is a dramatization based on real events. In a 2019 interview with TIME, Maras discussed how the film’s narrative relates to the historical record. The article reports that waiter Arjun was not one single real person but combined elements of two people, while chef Hemant Oberoi was real. The film also alters or combines other details, so its scenes and dialogue should not automatically be treated as literal historical records.
For a documentary viewing path, the production company identifies Surviving Mumbai as an inspiration for the feature. The available release announcement confirms that Universal Pictures Home Entertainment announced Blu-ray and DVD editions in 2019, with bonus features including production and cast discussions, the filmmakers’ discovery of the story, and a featurette about reaching out to survivors during pre-production. That announcement does not establish present-day stock, streaming availability, or compatibility for a particular edition.
