Homebound Review: Friendship and Dignity Under Systemic Pressure

Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound finds emotional force in two friends’ pursuit of dignity, even as its broad social argument and explanatory dialogue sometimes compete with the drama.

Homebound is a humane, sobering drama about two childhood friends who see police work as a path to dignity and security, only to find their choices shaped by caste, religion, class and gender. Neeraj Ghaywan’s film is most persuasive when those pressures surface through the friends’ relationship and the performances; its explanatory dialogue can sometimes make the social argument feel too plainly stated.

What is Homebound about?

Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, Homebound follows childhood friends Mohammed Shoaib Ali and Chandan Kumar, played by Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa, as they pursue police jobs from a North Indian village. The ambition is about more than employment: public service promises material security and a measure of dignity in a society that constrains both men in different ways. Janhvi Kapoor plays Sudha Bharti. The Festival de Cannes lists the film in its 2025 Un Certain Regard selection, with a production year of 2024 and a runtime of 119 minutes (Festival de Cannes catalogue).

The story also enters the pandemic-era migration crisis, widening the frame from two friends’ aspirations to the conditions that determine whose lives are treated as precarious. The film was inspired by a story that moved Ghaywan; reviews connect it to Basharat Peer’s 2020 reporting. It is a drama, not a documentary reconstruction, and its fictional characters should not be mistaken for the people in that reporting.

How well does the social critique work?

The film’s strongest choice is to keep its argument close to relationships and decisions. Caste and religious prejudice are not interchangeable obstacles: the friends encounter social pressure from distinct positions, while class and gender further shape what security and freedom can mean. Rahul Desai of The Hollywood Reporter India reads the film through these intersecting hierarchies and praises its willingness to let everyday conflicts breathe. That emphasis on lived experience gives the critique emotional texture rather than reducing it to a single-issue statement.

Yet the film is not always content to let implication do the work. Desai and Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express both find some dialogue overly explicit or expository. Gupta also argues that the film can seem to take on too many issues at once. The directness has a purpose: it makes the structures legible and resists softening their impact for an outside audience. But when a line explains what a scene has already made clear, the drama loses some of its ambiguity and force. The result is an urgent film whose social breadth is valuable, though not every idea is integrated with equal subtlety.

Does the friendship remain the emotional center?

It does, and that is what keeps the film from becoming a catalogue of injustices. The two men’s shared history gives their ambition a personal stake; structural pressures matter because they affect how the friends imagine a future together and what each can realistically claim. Leslie Felperin of The Guardian calls the film an emotionally rich study of friendship. Desai likewise points to its underlying empathy. Their praise identifies the balance Ghaywan is reaching for: a broad social field anchored in intimate human bonds.

The pandemic context enlarges that field and makes the title’s promise of home carry extra weight. The film’s emotional register is humane rather than merely bleak, even as its circumstances are sobering. Gupta finds it compassionate and urgent, while noting that some pandemic imagery may feel familiar from other films. That familiarity can blunt surprise, but the relationships keep the material from becoming only a general statement about crisis.

What do the performances and filmmaking contribute?

Khatter and Jethwa provide the central dramatic weight. Felperin and Gupta both praise their performances, and the friendship depends on their ability to make shared history feel present without turning every exchange into a declaration. Kapoor’s Sudha gives the story another point of view within its social landscape. Cannes reports that Kapoor read B. R. Ambedkar’s Annihilation of Caste and researched the role; that preparation is a relevant context for her work, not a requirement for viewers approaching the film (Festival de Cannes interview).

Felperin also praises the cinematography and describes the approach as direct and realist, without sanitizing the material for Western viewers. Desai notes visual echoes that add structure beneath the dialogue. Together, those observations point to a film whose form can carry meaning more quietly than its most explanatory lines. The visual work and performances support the emotional argument, even when the script sometimes spells out what the surrounding drama has already established.

Is Homebound worth watching?

For viewers interested in character-led drama about discrimination, friendship and the search for dignity, Homebound is worth watching. Its performances, empathy and visual craft give the subject human scale. Its limitations are real: the thematic scope can feel crowded, and some exposition reduces the space for viewers to draw their own conclusions. The film’s directness is also part of its ethical stance; as Felperin observes, it does not smooth difficult realities into a more comfortable viewing experience.

Ghaywan has described the film as “pro-humanity,” rather than anti-establishment, in a conversation with USC Annenberg Media (USC Annenberg Media). That is the director’s stated aim, not an independent verdict. On screen, the aspiration is most convincing when kindness and friendship emerge from the characters’ choices, rather than when the film explains its position outright.
