What happens in the final episode?
In “The Long and Winding Road, Pt. 3,” Tim records the last Tool Time. Returning guests join him, and Heidi is pregnant. Morgan tries to keep Tim by offering more money and an executive producer credit, but Tim declines. Apple TV describes the installment as Tim’s “finale Tool Time” and lists it as season 8, episode 27, with a 22-minute runtime and a May 25, 1999 date: Apple TV’s episode listing.

Jill’s decision concerns a different question: whether to take a job in Indiana. The family’s relocation follows her opportunity. In a retrospective published for the finale’s 25th anniversary, Patricia Richardson discussed the three-part story’s ending as the Taylors moving to Indiana so Jill could pursue the position: Los Angeles Times, May 24, 2024.
Do Tim and Jill move to Indiana?
Yes. The story outcome is that the Taylors leave Detroit for Indiana. The episode ends with a final home-improvement joke: the family sets off with the house itself in tow. It is a comic visual flourish, not a suggestion that the move is called off.

Does leaving Tool Time mean Tim stops working?
No. Tim’s departure is from the fictional television program he hosts, not from employment altogether. In a later continuity account tied to the Last Man Standing crossover, showrunner Kevin Abbott said, “Tim Taylor now works for Binford Tools.” Abbott described Tim as a senior company figure who conducted quality-control checks at Binford locations: TheWrap, December 30, 2020. That account concerns Tim’s later life in the crossover continuity; it is not dialogue or an explanation given in the 1999 finale.
What does the ending suggest?
One reasonable interpretation is that Tim chooses a new direction rather than accepting another lucrative reason to stay in his familiar role, while Jill’s career opportunity gives the family a reason to move. The documented plot establishes their choices, but it does not establish a definitive creator statement about what the finale symbolizes. The series is set in Detroit, as described by Hallmark Channel’s series page.

Apple TV lists “The Long and Winding Road, Pt. 3” as dated May 25, 1999, the same finale date reported in the Los Angeles Times retrospective. D23 gives the ABC series a September 17, 1991–September 17, 1999 date range in its series entry. Those records describe different things: an episode listing’s date and a series-range entry. For the final installment’s date, the episode listing and retrospective identify May 25, 1999.
