Home is a roughly 43-minute documentary about people experiencing homelessness in Cobourg, Ontario, including residents of a former encampment, and the town’s response. Directed by Will Bowes and produced by Linda Schuyler, the film focuses on Brookside and brings together personal stories, grassroots efforts and community tensions.
What is the documentary Home about?
Global News describes Home as an award-winning film introducing viewers to residents of a former Cobourg encampment and exploring the town’s response to homelessness. Its distributor catalogue gives the full title as Home: The Complicated and Human Stories of Homelessness. The film is a local documentary, not a census of homelessness or a comprehensive evaluation of housing policy.
Brookside, a former youth detention centre, is central to the story. ReFrame’s festival synopsis says producer Linda Schuyler’s exploration began after she encountered an encampment at her family’s former ancestral home. It describes residents being repeatedly displaced before settling outside Brookside, then a vacant facility. The film’s themes include personal experience, grassroots aid, community tension and the possibility that the property could be sold for private development.
The Kingston Canadian Film Festival presents the documentary as gathering perspectives from people experiencing homelessness and from people trying new approaches. That framing makes the film a community story as well as a portrait of individual experience; a programme synopsis alone does not establish how much time or weight the film gives each perspective.

Who made the film, and how long is it?
The Kingston Canadian Film Festival credits Will Bowes as director and Linda Schuyler as producer. McIntyre Media’s Canadian distributor catalogue identifies Strathhome Documentary Inc. as producer, lists the film as Canadian and English-language, and gives its runtime as 42 minutes, 57 seconds. The festival rounds that to 43 minutes. The catalogue’s 2025 copyright year is not, by itself, confirmation of the film’s release or premiere date.
What happened at Brookside after the events in the film?
The film’s setting sits within a changing local situation. In a report published March 19, 2026, Northumberland 89.7 FM said the year-long Brookside encampment had been dismantled roughly a year and a half earlier. The report also said Northumberland County had acquired the former Cobourg Retirement Residence to renovate as a shelter before another winter encampment began. Those are details reported at that time, not confirmation of the shelter’s current capacity, operating status or present-day conditions.
