Stewart told Now To Love that he moved to Sydney for the part. He also spoke about developing Perri in collaboration with the show’s script department and directors, as well as drawing on conversations with friends and whānau.
What is Perri Hayes’s story?
Perri’s arrival connects him with Tane’s effort to support young people who have been in trouble with the law. Later plot coverage reported that Perri tells Tane he has experienced long-term abuse from his father and has been pressured into illegal activity. This is a storyline account, not a statement about Stewart’s life.

Why did Stewart connect with Perri’s cultural story?
Stewart said he was born in the UK and raised in Australia, and discussed the difference between having cultural heritage and experiencing it in everyday life. In PerthNow, he described Perri as having culture through his mother but not having seen it first-hand, and said: “People sometimes feel lost without their culture and Tane is able to guide Perri on that journey because Perri is the same as myself, he has this culture from his mother but never got to see it first-hand.”
In the Now To Love interview, Stewart also reflected on the opportunity the role represented: “You can only dream of having the chance to work on what most would say is the pinnacle and pillar of TV,” he said. He described the call confirming his move to Sydney as “numbing” and said he would treasure the experience throughout his career.
His comments explain the connection he saw between his own experience and Perri’s. They are Stewart’s perspective on the role, rather than a guarantee about how viewers received the character.

Is Perri Hayes still on Home and Away?
A 2025 arrivals-and-departures roundup from Back to the Bay said viewers had said goodbye to Perri, but that report does not confirm the character’s definitive current status or whether Stewart returned later. The available reporting is not enough to make a firm claim about either point.
