Their tributes honored his work on screen and behind the camera, his generosity toward collaborators, and his role in building a home for independent filmmaking through Sundance.
What happened
Redford died at his home at Sundance in Utah, his publicist said. The Associated Press reported that he died in his sleep; no cause of death was provided.
Colleagues remembered the person behind the performances
Jane Fonda’s remembrance, reported by ABC News, joined personal grief to a political legacy. “It hit me hard this morning when I read that Bob was gone. I can’t stop crying,” she said. She added: “He meant a lot to me and was a beautiful person in every way. He stood for an America we have to keep fighting for.”
Dustin Hoffman recalled their work together on All the President’s Men as one of his greatest professional experiences. In a statement reported by ABC News, Hoffman praised Redford’s decency as genuine: “He was that rare person where what you see is what you get: the decency he projected in his movies was genuine. I’ll miss him.”

Barbra Streisand, who worked with Redford on The Way We Were, remembered him as “charismatic, intelligent, intense, always interesting — and one of the finest actors ever,” according to the Los Angeles Times. She called him “one of a kind” and said she was grateful to have worked with him. Meryl Streep, in a statement shared with ABC News, called him “my lovely friend.”
Tributes honored his work as an actor and filmmaker
Redford’s screen work was a recurring point of remembrance. Hoffman’s tribute connected the performance in All the President’s Men with the character he saw in its star, while Streisand emphasized Redford’s presence and skill as an actor. The Los Angeles Times also reported that Elizabeth McGovern credited Redford with giving her an early opportunity in Ordinary People, the film he directed.

Sean Astin, speaking as SAG-AFTRA president, described Redford’s influence across performance, filmmaking, philanthropy and civic life. “As a filmmaker, a philanthropist, a performer and more, Robert Redford is the essence of cinema,” he said in the union’s September 16 statement. SAG-AFTRA noted that Redford received its Life Achievement Award in 1995.

For Ron Howard, Marlee Matlin and the Sundance Institute, Redford’s legacy also lay in the opportunities associated with Sundance. The Los Angeles Times reported that Howard praised Redford’s cultural influence and contribution to independent film; Matlin linked the exposure of her film CODA to Sundance. These are their assessments of the festival’s importance, not a measured count of its impact.

The Sundance Institute’s statement, quoted by ABC News, called Redford its founder and friend and said his vision “of a space and a platform for independent voices launched a movement that, over four decades later, has inspired generations of artists and redefined cinema in the U.S. and around the world.” The Institute’s description frames Sundance as a lasting platform for independent voices; it is an institutional tribute, not an independently quantified measure.
The American Academy of Dramatic Arts, which identified Redford as a member of its Class of 1959, remembered his artistry, activism and support for education. Across the statements, the picture that emerges is of a performer and director whose influence colleagues connected not only to individual films, but also to the people and independent artists he supported.
