Yes. Holly Robinson Peete said she felt so alone after her son RJ’s autism diagnosis—and so out of step with her husband Rodney—that she told him, “I was ready to leave him.” The account, reported by People from Peete’s appearance on Kelly Ripa’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast, describes a crisis she considered leaving over, not a separation announcement.
What Holly Robinson Peete said about her marriage
Peete recalled that she and Rodney responded differently when their son RJ was diagnosed with autism. She said Rodney was initially in denial, while she felt alone trying to face what the diagnosis meant for their family. “We were not on the same page. We weren’t even in the same state or country,” she said, according to People’s account.
Her remark that she was ready to leave describes how close she felt to ending the marriage during that painful period. The report says the couple worked through the conflict; it does not say they separated. Us Weekly also reported on February 2, 2024, on Peete’s account and identified the podcast episode as having aired January 30.
The therapy session that became a turning point
In the People report, Peete identified a therapy session as a moment when Rodney’s perspective began to change. He watched RJ connect with his therapist and recognized that he needed to build that kind of connection with his son himself. The account presents this as a shift in Rodney’s response, not as an instant resolution to every difficulty the family faced.

These comments are Peete’s personal recollection as reported by People and Us Weekly. They should not be read as a universal account of how parents experience an autism diagnosis or navigate a marriage. The original podcast audio or transcript is not available in the cited reporting, so the quotations here remain attributed to those reports.
RJ’s diagnosis and the family’s public advocacy
RJ was diagnosed at age three in 2000, according to a 2007 CNN interview transcript. Peete later described the family’s first day hearing a list of things RJ supposedly would never do as the “never day.” In a Yale School of Medicine conversation, she recalled predictions that he would not mainstream in school, live independently, drive or have meaningful employment. These were the family’s recollections of what they were told at the time, not medical conclusions endorsed here.

- Effective Behaviour Support – Visual aid helps children understand expectations on them and take charge of their actions. Nonverbal communication gives clear guidance on what behaviours are appropriate or not. Uses clear non-verbal instructions to reduce demand avoidance.
- Clear Communication – Combine positive and negative symbols – e.g ‘no hitting, touch gently’ – to ensure effective understanding and actionable behaviour. While phrases like ‘kind hands’ sound positive, they are too vague for many autistic children who struggle with abstract concepts.
- Simple Visual Tool – 22 pocket flash cards neatly organized on a clip-open binding ring. Easily rearrange the symbols as required to suit your child, or even leave some at home for ease of use. Versatile, portable behaviour strategy.
- Expertly Designed – Genuine Picture Communication Symbols (PCS). Designed by experts specifically for autistic children and those with ASD/ADHD. Used by millions globally for over 30 years. Probably already familiar to your child from school or therapy. Compatible with PECS cards.
- Sturdy And Practical – Premium plastic material. Waterproof, highly durable and easy to clean - perfect for an autism household! Will not split, rip or easily crease like laminated paper or cardstock. Will last for years.
Peete said in the CNN interview that the family was not ready to speak publicly right after RJ’s diagnosis: they did not yet feel they knew enough or had enough victories to help others. Their later advocacy grew from that experience. Scholastic describes Peete’s work and the HollyRod Foundation’s support for families living with autism and Parkinson’s in its interview with Peete. In an April 18, 2025 CNN interview, Peete revisited the “list of nevers” and criticized rhetoric that portrays autistic people as disposable or hopeless. That later interview provides context for her advocacy; it was not a response to the 2024 podcast account.
