The trailer’s polished domestic imagery is set against language that hints at pressure beneath the surface. What to Watch transcribes Nancy saying, “It might seem like we have everything together, but right under the surface, it’s like we’re being strangled.” That is trailer dialogue, not a factual description of Holland, Michigan, or confirmation of what Fred does in the story. What to Watch’s trailer coverage also includes Kidman discussing Nancy’s apparent stability and private unease.
Is Fred controlling Nancy?
The official synopsis says Nancy and her colleague become suspicious of a secret; it does not describe Fred as controlling. The trailer invites questions about whether Nancy’s comfortable-looking marriage conceals something darker, but a viewer should not treat the control claim as confirmed without a fuller account of the film. The Guardian’s review describes an opening suspicion that Fred is having an affair, while also criticizing the film’s pacing and execution. Cast and creative team
Kidman plays Nancy Vandergroot and is also a producer. Matthew Macfadyen plays her husband Fred, Jude Hill plays their son Harry, and Gael García Bernal plays Nancy’s colleague. Amazon’s cast listing also names Rachel Sennott, Lennon Parham, Isaac Krasner and Jeff Pope. Mimi Cave, who directed Fresh, directed Holland from a screenplay by Andrew Sodroski. Producers are Kate Churchill, Peter Dealbert, Kidman and Per Saari. Amazon lists the film’s cast and credits.
How Holland follows Fresh
Cave’s earlier feature Fresh used modern dating as the entry point to horror. Holland shifts the unease into a Midwestern domestic setting, drawing on Dutch visual motifs and the contrast between a tidy public image and private uncertainty. The Guardian identifies that contrast as part of the film’s atmosphere, though its review is critical of how the story unfolds. The two films share a talent for making familiar social settings feel ominous, but Holland is presented as a thriller rather than a documentary or a factual account of a real family.

Release date and where to watch Holland
Holland premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival in Austin and began streaming on Prime Video on March 27, 2025. Amazon says it is streaming on the service and included with Prime membership; availability and membership terms can vary by country, so check the local Prime Video listing. Amazon’s release announcement confirms the streaming status. ComingSoon’s earlier trailer report gave the March 27 date and planned Prime Video release. Rotten Tomatoes lists the film as a mystery/thriller, rated R, with a runtime of 1 hour 48 minutes. Its live critic and audience scores change as reviews and ratings are added, so they are not a stable description of the film. Rotten Tomatoes’ listing has the current classification and aggregates.
