Nancy kills Fred in the final confrontation; his death is not the ending’s main mystery. The unresolved question is whether Dave—and Nancy’s relationship with him—was real, or whether Nancy imagined him as a catalyst for uncovering the truth.
What happened to Fred in Holland?
Nancy’s investigation first seems to point toward an affair. But Fred’s model railway reveals something much darker: names on houses in the miniature town correspond to young women who were murdered. Fred is a serial killer, not simply an unfaithful husband, according to Radio Times’ account of the ending.
Dave later follows Fred and catches him during another murder. He stabs Fred, who stumbles into a lake. Dave believes Fred is dead, but tells Nancy that Fred has left town. Fred survives and returns during the Tulip Time festival, urging Nancy to start their marriage over as if she could separate the family man from the killer she has discovered.
Nancy rejects Fred’s version of their life. She tells her son Harry to run, shoots Fred, and then beats him to death with a clog. The film’s final confrontation establishes that Nancy kills Fred; it does not leave his fate unresolved.

What does Nancy’s final line mean?
Radio Times transcribes Nancy’s last line as: “I finally saw a way out. But sometimes I wonder, was it even real?” The question turns attention from Fred’s fate to Nancy’s account of what happened with Dave.
On one level, the line suits a film built around the contrast between Holland’s polished, idyllic appearance and the disturbing secrets hidden beneath it. On another, it asks whether Nancy’s connection with Dave happened as she remembers it. The question leaves the audience to reconsider how much of her experience—and the role Dave played in it—was real.

Is Dave real, or did Nancy imagine him?
The film does not definitively confirm that Dave was imaginary. Both readings remain possible:
- Dave was real: He is Nancy’s colleague and lover, and his involvement—including his confrontation with Fred—shapes her choices and understanding of the danger.
- Dave was imagined: Director Mimi Cave has been reported as suggesting that Dave may never have been there, and that Nancy may have fantasised the relationship as a catalyst for finding the truth. Radio Times attributes that comment to Cave via USA Today; it is a possible interpretation, not a confirmed solution.
That distinction matters: the final line invites doubt about Nancy’s story, but does not settle it. The strongest clear plot fact is Fred’s death; Dave’s reality is deliberately less certain.

What the ending leaves clear—and what it leaves open
- Fred’s model railway connects names to murdered young women, exposing him as a serial killer.
- Fred survives Dave’s stabbing and the fall into the lake, then returns to the family.
- Nancy kills Fred at the festival.
- Nancy’s final question opens the possibility that Dave was imagined, without establishing that he was.

Holland is a thriller set in Holland, Michigan, starring Nicole Kidman as Nancy, Matthew Macfadyen as Fred, and Gael García Bernal as Dave. Jude Hill plays Harry. Mimi Cave directed the film, written by Andrew Sodroski. Amazon says it premiered at SXSW in Austin in March 2025 and is streaming on Prime Video.
