HIV Survivor Jake Glaser on Continuing His Mother Elizabeth’s AIDS Advocacy

Jake Glaser’s EGPAF profile links his commitment to supporting research for children with HIV to the advocacy begun by his mother, Elizabeth Glaser.

Jake Glaser describes carrying forward the advocacy of his mother, Elizabeth Glaser, who helped establish the Pediatric AIDS Foundation after her daughter Ariel died of AIDS in 1988. Who is Jake Glaser?

Jake Glaser is the son of Elizabeth Glaser and a person who acquired HIV before birth, according to EGPAF’s account of the family’s history. The foundation’s ambassador profile shares his perspective on growing up HIV-positive and presents him as continuing his mother’s advocacy. How did Jake and his family acquire HIV?

EGPAF’s history says Elizabeth acquired HIV through a blood transfusion while giving birth to Ariel in 1981. The foundation says Elizabeth unknowingly passed HIV to Ariel through breastfeeding and to Jake during pregnancy. These are the transmission routes and chronology described by EGPAF. What happened to Elizabeth and Ariel?

Ariel died in 1988. After her death, Elizabeth and friends established the Pediatric AIDS Foundation to address the needs of children affected by HIV and AIDS. Elizabeth died in 1994, and the organization was subsequently renamed in her honor, becoming the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. What did Elizabeth Glaser do for children with AIDS?

Elizabeth brought public attention to the experiences and needs of children with AIDS and helped build an organization focused on them. EGPAF characterizes her advocacy as having “spurred the development of pediatric HIV treatments that continue to save lives around the world.” That description comes from the foundation, which also states its mission is “to end HIV/AIDS globally in children, youth, and families.” EGPAF’s mission and account of Elizabeth’s legacy.

How is Jake continuing his mother’s advocacy?

In his EGPAF profile, Jake describes a commitment to supporting research and collaboration to find answers for children with HIV. He frames that commitment in personal terms: “She wouldn’t let anything stand in my way, and neither will I.” Jake’s profile and statement.

His earlier work with young people

A 2017 EGPAF article described Jake’s ambassador work and Modern Advocate, an initiative that used alternative sports and activities to engage young people around healthy living and reduce HIV/AIDS stigma. The article also reported his concern that schools can reinforce stigma when HIV education is separated from education about other sexually transmitted infections.
