Hit Man is inspired by a real undercover operation, but it is not a true account of Gary Johnson’s life. The real Houston-area professor posed as a contract killer to help law enforcement catch people seeking to hire one. The film relocates the story to New Orleans and invents its romance and murder plot around that premise.
Is Hit Man based on a true story?
Yes, in the limited sense that its central undercover premise comes from a real person and real police work. Gary Johnson was a part-time college professor who posed as a hit man for the Houston district attorney’s office, helping apprehend people who sought a professional killer. The film draws on Skip Hollandsworth’s 2001 Texas Monthly profile of Johnson. The Associated Press also described the movie as drawing from that real-life story: Associated Press, September 18, 2023.

That is a real foundation, not a promise that the scenes or plot follow the record. Netflix’s account of the adaptation identifies the film as a fantasy built from Johnson’s unusual work and a brief episode: Netflix Tudum, January 17, 2025. “Inspired by” or “loosely based on” is more accurate than calling the film a true account.
Who was the real Gary Johnson?
Johnson was a part-time college professor who moonlighted as a pretend hit man for Houston-area law enforcement. People who approached him believing he could arrange a killing could instead become subjects of an investigation. That undercover setup is the most clearly documented connection between Johnson and the film.

How much of Hit Man really happened?
| Film element | What is supported | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Undercover hit-man work | Johnson posed as a fake hit man for Houston-area law enforcement and helped catch prospective clients. | Real foundation. |
| Setting and job | The film places Gary in New Orleans and depicts him as a psychology professor; reporting places Johnson’s work in Houston and describes him as a part-time college professor. | Adapted characterization and setting. |
| Madison and the romance | Netflix reports that Johnson declined to set up a sting against an unnamed woman seeking to kill her abusive husband, showing her compassion instead. | A brief real episode informed the story; Madison and the film’s extended romance are fictionalized. |
| Disguises and personas | Director Richard Linklater said Johnson used slight disguises: “The real Gary did slight disguises, but not to the extent that we see in the film.” | The elaborate wigs, accents, and personas are heightened for the movie. |
| Murder plot and ending | Linklater said the film’s murder-related plot was invented; the end-credit claim about zero murders was also made up as a joke. | Do not treat the movie’s murder plot as a real Johnson case. |
The comparison draws on Netflix’s June 10, 2024 explainer and January 17, 2025 creator interview. The Los Angeles Times likewise characterizes the romance and its complications as inventions: Los Angeles Times, June 7, 2024.

Was Madison real?
Not as the film presents her. The real-life episode that suggested the character involved an unnamed woman seeking to kill her abusive husband. Netflix reports that Johnson declined to set up a sting and responded with compassion. The sources do not establish that she was named Madison or that the pair had the relationship portrayed in the film. The movie turns that brief encounter into an elaborate romantic crime-thriller plot.

The filmmakers describe drawing on real murder-for-hire cases and surveillance tapes. Linklater spoke with Johnson; co-writer and star Glen Powell did not meet him by design. Those details describe the creators’ process, not independent verification of the movie’s scenes. Linklater called the result “a fantasy at the end of the day” in a Netflix interview.

The cleanest way to judge the accuracy is to separate three layers: Johnson’s undercover work is real; the compassionate response to one prospective client supplied a story seed; and the film’s central romance, elaborate disguises, and murder complications are fictionalized or invented.
