Spoiler warning: this article reveals the killer and the ending of Netflix’s six-episode limited series His & Hers.

Alice, Anna Andrews’s mother, is the real killer. The finale first points to Lexy Jones, also known as Catherine Kelly, but a year later Anna reads a letter in which Alice confesses to killing Rachel, Helen and Zoe and admits she planted evidence to frame Lexy. Anna learns the truth and does not tell her husband, Jack Harper, whose sister Zoe was among Alice’s victims.

The setup for readers new to the series

Netflix describes His & Hers as a six-episode limited series adapted from Alice Feeney’s novel. Tessa Thompson plays Atlanta news anchor and reporter Anna Andrews, who returns to her hometown of Dahlonega, Georgia, after a murder. Jon Bernthal plays Jack Harper, a local detective. Anna and Jack are estranged spouses pulled into the same case. Netflix’s Tudum introduction to the series sets out that premise, and as of Netflix’s January 2026 coverage, all six episodes were available to stream on Netflix.

How the finale misleads, then reverses

The finale is built to make the audience accept Lexy as the culprit. The sequence runs in this order:

  1. The finale identifies Lexy Jones, also known as Catherine Kelly, as the killer.
  2. Priya saves Anna, and Lexy’s apparent plan is stopped.
  3. One year later, Anna reads a letter from her mother, Alice.
  4. In the letter, Alice admits she killed Rachel, Helen and Zoe, and says she planted evidence to frame Lexy.

Netflix’s Tudum finale explainer lays out the reveal in the same order, and it is the reveal the letter overturns. The letter is the structural pivot of the ending: it turns a closed case back into a secret that only Anna holds.

Alice’s motive: revenge on the women who watched

In the novel, the story is told from three perspectives, Anna’s, Jack’s and “The Killer’s.” Creator and showrunner William Oldroyd told TheWrap that this structure did not translate directly to the screen. The series instead gives the story to Anna, whose voiceover reads Alice’s letter, and it uses a home video to reveal the sexual assault Alice witnessed in the past. Alice’s motive is revenge against the women who watched and jeered rather than intervening.

TheWrap quotes a line Alice speaks in the series: “They could’ve stopped me but they see what they wanna see,” Alice says. “No one expects a woman to be a serial killer.” The line is Alice’s, as the show writes her; it is not a separate statement from Oldroyd. TheWrap’s full account of the adaptation choices is in its ending explained interview.

What Anna knows and what Jack does not

Anna knows that Alice killed Zoe, Jack’s sister. Jack does not know the truth about his mother-in-law. The reported ending brings Anna and Jack back together. They adopt Jack’s orphaned niece, Meg, and raise her together, and the story does not give Jack the confession.

Why the ending reads as bittersweet

The title’s “bittersweet” framing fits the ending’s pairing of a family reunion with a concealed crime. Anna and Jack move forward together, but Anna keeps Alice’s confession from Jack. This is an editorial reading of the reported ending, not a quote from either actor or from Oldroyd.

What Thompson and Bernthal addressed

TV Insider’s January 8, 2026 interview with Thompson and Bernthal covered three things: the killer reveal, the Episode 4 scene in which Anna and Jack discuss their lost baby, and whether Anna tells Jack the truth. TV Insider reports that neither actor thinks she does. The interview is also available as video; see the TV Insider interview.
