Spoilers ahead for “Checkmate,” High Potential Season 2, Episode 2. Morgan’s suspicion is right: Matthew Clark is the Game Maker, and his scheme puts Maya Price in danger. The episode resolves that immediate threat, while leaving Roman’s situation—and the Game Maker’s longer-term place in the story—open.

“Checkmate” is the second half of the two-part Season 2 opening. ABC’s synopsis describes three threads: Morgan suspects the Game Maker is behind unresolved crimes, Daphne and Oz look for Roman, and Elliot prepares a talent-show act. The episode’s crime plot reaches a clear arrest; its Roman mystery does not.

How Morgan catches the Game Maker

Matthew Clark, the Game Maker, presented himself to the LAPD at the end of the previous episode. The question in “Checkmate” is no longer whether Morgan has identified him, but whether the team can connect him to the crimes. TV Guide’s recap describes Morgan recognizing that she needs to play along with Matthew’s apparent game in a way that makes him underestimate her.

Matthew’s plan puts Maya Price at risk

Matthew exploits the existing Maya Price case. He wants Jason released so Derek, who believes Jason abducted Maya, will kill him. Morgan discovers that Maya is being held in the building, and officers intervene before Derek can murder Jason. Maya is found safe.

The evidence and Matthew’s motive

Morgan confronts Matthew with evidence, including his use of Maya’s donated blood from a hospital to mislead investigators. The recaps describe his revenge motive as rooted in his mother’s history: she was accused of stealing from a wealthy employer and died in prison. That backstory explains the grievance Matthew cites; it does not excuse his crimes.

Matthew’s attempted escape

Rather than face prison, Matthew tries to jump from his apartment balcony. Morgan has anticipated the move: he lands on an air safety cushion, and Oz takes him into custody. The immediate danger is over, but showrunner and executive producer Todd Harthan cautioned in a TV Guide interview against assuming Matthew’s story is definitively finished.

What “Checkmate” reveals about Roman

Daphne and Oz follow the lead on Roman. He is alive, and the man Morgan previously believed was Roman is actually Arthur, who has helped Roman hide from the authorities. The episode does not establish who is hunting Roman or why, leaving those questions unresolved.

Elliot’s “MC Squared” talent-show act

Elliot prepares a surprise rap performance under the name “MC Squared,” developed with Ludo. His family shows up to support him. When classmates mock the act, Ava stands up for him, giving the episode a supportive family beat alongside the darker case.

What the ending settles—and what it leaves open

  • Settled: Morgan exposes Matthew’s scheme, Maya is found safe, and Matthew is arrested after his failed balcony jump.
  • Still open: Roman is alive, but the episode does not explain who is pursuing him or why.
  • Not necessarily over: Matthew’s immediate case arc concludes, though Harthan’s interview leaves room for the character to return to the story.
