For one encoded feed relayed continuously to YouTube, compare the exact server family and region, its sustained public bandwidth, and its monthly outbound-traffic allowance. Hetzner lists 20 TB/month for EU CX, CPX, and CAX Cloud Servers, while OVHcloud Public Cloud includes outbound traffic in most locations but applies a 1 TB/month quota per project in Singapore, Sydney, and Mumbai. OVHcloud VPS is a separate product with different terms. None of these allowances alone guarantees an uninterrupted stream.

Start by distinguishing a relay from an encoder

A cloud relay forwards a stream that has already been encoded to YouTube Live. In that setup, the server’s outbound transfer is principally determined by the stream’s bitrate and the time it runs. For a single upstream feed, do not multiply the relay’s egress by the number of YouTube viewers: YouTube ingests the feed and transcodes it into viewer output formats. This is an inference for a single-ingest relay, not a provider performance test; it does not apply if your server separately serves viewers.

If the server must encode or transcode the video in real time, bandwidth is only part of the decision. You also need adequate CPU or GPU capacity and evidence that the selected instance can sustain the workload. The available provider information does not benchmark Hetzner or OVHcloud for live encoding.

Compare the right products and traffic terms

Option Outbound traffic terms Important qualification
Hetzner Cloud 20 TB/month for EU CX, CPX, and CAX Cloud Servers; 0.5–5 TB/month for Singapore plans and 1–5 TB/month for US plans, depending on plan. CCX allowances also vary by region and plan. Usage is calculated by calendar month and covers outgoing traffic; over-limit cloud traffic is charged in 100 MB blocks. The warning system is configurable and separate from the included allowance. These figures are from Hetzner’s documentation, last changed 2024-05-21. Hetzner traffic documentation.
OVHcloud Public Cloud Outbound public traffic is included in all locations except Singapore, Sydney, and Mumbai. In those locations, each project has 1 TB/month outbound included, with additional GB charged. The quota is per project and datacentre; unused quota does not roll over, and the FAQ says there is no alert system for approaching it. Inbound traffic does not count against the outbound quota. The US pricing page, accessed 2026-10-03, says IPv4 will be billed separately beginning October 1, 2026; check the selected region and instance’s current terms at purchase. OVHcloud Public Cloud pricing and OVHcloud Public Cloud FAQ.
OVHcloud VPS The product page advertises unlimited traffic; public bandwidth varies by plan. This is a separate product line, not Public Cloud. The reseller page says Asia-Pacific VPS plans have monthly quotas and bandwidth is capped at 10 Mbps after the quota. Do not treat “unlimited” as a universal OVHcloud term. OVHcloud VPS and OVHcloud Reseller VPS.

OVHcloud’s VPS page also states a 99.9% SLA. That is a service-level claim, not proof that a YouTube stream will never disconnect or an apples-to-apples measure against a cloud server. OVHcloud’s dedicated-server bandwidth guidance discusses unmetered, guaranteed, and burst bandwidth, but those are dedicated-server terms and should not be assigned to Public Cloud or VPS. Estimate monthly transfer from bitrate

Use decimal units and a continuous stream estimate: bitrate in bits per second Ă— seconds online Ă· 8 gives bytes transferred, before protocol overhead and other traffic. A 6 Mbps stream running for 30 days transfers about 1.944 decimal TB: 6,000,000 Ă— 2,592,000 Ă· 8. This is an illustrative calculation, not a bill forecast.

YouTube lists 6 Mbps as its recommended bitrate for 720p at 30 or 60 fps using AV1 or H.265, and 8 Mbps for H.264 at those frame rates. Those are YouTube encoder recommendations, not a guarantee of the bitrate your content or chosen settings will use. Codec, resolution, frame rate, and content affect the configured bitrate. Leave allowance for protocol overhead, reconnects, updates, and any other workload.

Choose a provider, family, and region fairly

  1. Decide whether the job is relay-only or encoding. For relay-only, prioritize egress terms, sustained public bandwidth, and a reliable route to YouTube ingest. For encoding, assess and test CPU/GPU headroom separately.
  2. Select the exact service family and location. Do not compare Hetzner Cloud allowances with OVHcloud VPS claims or dedicated-server bandwidth descriptions as though they were equivalent products. Confirm region-specific terms and plan limits on the relevant pricing or documentation page.
  3. Calculate expected transfer. Multiply the planned bitrate by expected stream hours, convert bits to bytes, then budget for overhead and other traffic. Compare that estimate with the allowance for the selected plan and billing period.
  4. Validate the complete path before production. Check sustained upload capacity from the actual server and region to YouTube’s ingest, not just a short peak result. Run a representative test with the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, and motion.
  5. Plan recovery and monitoring. Use an external monitor, configure restart and reconnect behavior, and decide how you will restore service if the server, route, encoder, or YouTube ingest connection fails.

There is no controlled Hetzner-versus-OVHcloud test established for this exact workload, so the evidence supports comparing terms and validating your chosen path—not declaring a measured winner for uptime or stream quality.

Set up and test the YouTube ingest

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends choosing quality that your available connection can reliably sustain, testing upload speed, testing with representative audio and motion, and monitoring stream health. It recommends RTMPS for secure ingest. Its listed encoder guidance includes CBR, a two-second keyframe interval recommendation (do not exceed four seconds), and support for H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. These are YouTube platform instructions; they do not mean either cloud provider supplies an encoder or guarantees a particular ingest quality. 1. Create or schedule the YouTube Live event in YouTube Studio and use the stream key for that event or the persistent key you have intentionally configured. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it in logs, screenshots, or public configuration.
  2. Configure the relay or encoder to send to YouTube’s ingest using RTMPS where supported. For an encoder, set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, staying within YouTube’s four-second maximum recommendation; choose codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate the server and network can sustain.
  3. Test at the intended operating settings with representative content and audio. YouTube explicitly recommends an upload speed test; the measured path must have enough sustained capacity for the configured bitrate, with headroom for variation.
  4. Watch YouTube stream health during the test and confirm that audio, video, and ingest remain stable. Verify that your external monitor detects a stopped feed and that your restart/reconnect path actually restores it.

Common failures and what to check

  • Traffic allowance is being consumed faster than expected: verify bitrate, online hours, and whether the server has other outbound workloads. Recalculate monthly transfer and check the correct region and product family’s allowance.
  • Connection drops or stream health degrades: test sustained server-to-YouTube upload capacity, reduce the encoder setting if the path cannot hold it reliably, and inspect reconnect and restart behavior. A plan’s traffic allowance does not establish its sustained throughput.
  • OVHcloud Singapore, Sydney, or Mumbai transfer exceeds the included quota: check usage at the project and datacentre level and account for additional outbound GB charges; unused quota does not roll over.
  • An Asia-Pacific OVHcloud VPS slows after heavy usage: check whether the plan’s monthly quota has been crossed; the reseller page says bandwidth is then capped at 10 Mbps.
  • Video stops despite adequate egress: investigate the encoder or relay process, server resource pressure, YouTube ingest health, and your recovery automation. Capacity figures are not an end-to-end uptime guarantee.
