The film resolves one apparent mystery but leaves its final image open: Paxton figures out that the “resurrection” was staged, while the butterfly that appears after her escape could be ordinary, imagined, miraculous—or a sign she did not survive. Directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods say they have a specific interpretation, but have deliberately kept it private so viewers can reach and defend their own.
What happens at the end of Heretic?
After the poisoned-pie episode, Paxton and Barnes return to the basement and see a woman who appears to have come back to life. The woman delivers a prophecy that includes the warning “It is not real.” Paxton works out that the apparent miracle was a deception: another prisoner entered by a hidden route, removed the dead woman’s body and took her place. The A24 awards screenplay records Paxton’s reasoning and her discovery of the tunnel and the first woman’s body below it, making the staged body switch the strongest explanation of this episode within the story.
Reed then steers Paxton toward the hidden passage, presenting it as a route to his “one true religion.” She finds women held in cages and recognizes that Reed has been testing how far he can control her and the others. Paxton attacks him with a letter opener. Reed stabs Barnes, then Paxton; Barnes, who appears dead, rises long enough to drive a nailed board into Reed and save Paxton. Barnes collapses, and Paxton escapes through a window. TIME’s account describes this sequence in the released film.
Outside, a butterfly lands on Paxton’s hand. After a camera cut, it has vanished. The plot does not establish whether she saw a physical butterfly, imagined it, or experienced something supernatural.

What did the directors say about the ending?
Beck and Woods have said that the ending means something specific to them, but they do not disclose what that interpretation is. Woods said, “To us, the ending does mean something specific,” then compared declaring it to naming one religion as the one true religion. Beck said “we hope people watch it and have a very specific interpretation, but we hope that it’s different from person to person.” Their comments support calling the ambiguity intentional; they do not confirm that Paxton is dead, that Barnes’s return is supernatural, or that the scene is a dream.
Paxton actor Chloe East has also described her view as changing across repeat viewings. She said, “There are so many polarizing opinions on it and I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer.” That is East’s perspective, not a definitive plot explanation.

What might the final butterfly mean?
The image draws on two earlier details. Paxton says she would want to return as a butterfly to visit loved ones, and Reed introduces Zhuangzi’s Butterfly Dream, a story that unsettles the boundary between dreaming and waking. Those references make the butterfly feel significant, but they do not settle what physically happened.
| Reading | What it assumes | What the image suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Paxton survives and sees an ordinary butterfly | She escaped the house, and the butterfly is physically present. | It echoes her wish to return as a butterfly, without requiring a supernatural explanation. |
| Paxton is injured and imagines it | She survives the escape, but the butterfly is a vision or hallucination. | Her wish and Reed’s dream-and-reality puzzle shape what she sees. |
| The butterfly marks divine intervention or an afterlife | The scene carries a supernatural meaning; in the afterlife reading, Paxton has died. | The butterfly becomes a sign of transformation, return or passage beyond death. |
TIME discusses these possibilities without resolving them, and the directors’ public remarks leave room for viewers to choose among them. The body-switch and the butterfly should not be treated as equally uncertain: Paxton explains the former, and the screenplay supports her deduction; the final image remains open.

Why Reed calls control his “one true religion”
Reed claims that belief can be exposed as a system of manipulation, then makes control his own answer to religious certainty. He stages tests, predicts responses and turns his captives into supposed evidence for his theory. Den of Geek reports Woods describing Reed’s experiments as “a game of chess.” That phrase characterizes Reed’s method; it is not proof that the filmmakers endorse his account of religion.
The contradiction is central to Reed’s character: he presents himself as having escaped faith, but treats his own theory as an unquestionable truth and enforces it through coercion. The supposed prophet’s appearance is one of his control tricks, not a reliable revelation.

How Paxton and Barnes challenge Reed
Barnes resists Reed’s conversational control and challenges him directly. Sophie Thatcher has described Barnes as the first to question him, while Paxton initially tries harder to appease him. Paxton’s final choices do not amount to a tidy victory in Reed’s theological argument. She acts on her own judgment, tries to help another person and escapes; the closing prayer can be read as a sign that Reed has not dictated what she believes or does. That is an interpretation of the film, not a confirmed explanation of the butterfly.
What the ending settles—and what it leaves unresolved
- Settled within the story: Paxton identifies the apparent resurrection as a body switch, and the screenplay shows her finding the hidden route and the original woman’s body.
- Shown in the closing sequence: Barnes kills Reed after he attacks the sisters, then collapses; Paxton escapes.
- Deliberately unresolved: whether the butterfly is ordinary, imagined, supernatural, or connected to Paxton’s death.
- Not publicly disclosed: the directors’ own specific interpretation of the final image.
