In the videos, Nala moves between Chris’s legs, rapidly shifts or hops her back feet, and receives scratches around her hindquarters while Chris sings a short, repeated refrain. It looks spontaneous, affectionate, and instantly understandable—even to viewers seeing it for the first time.
Who are Nala and Chris?
Nala is the golden retriever at the center of Adventuring With Nala, the outdoor-lifestyle brand run by Chris Lindamood. The channel’s identity is broader than the viral stomp clips: Chris and Nala hike, camp, take road trips, explore snowy landscapes, swim, backpack, and document life outdoors, especially in Utah and other western settings.
The channel’s current public profile lists more than 1 million subscribers and hundreds of millions of views, although platform totals change over time. An August 2022 interview reported that the pair had already surpassed 3 million TikTok followers. That figure should be understood as a dated media report, not a current, independently verified TikTok count.
That broader context matters. Nala did not appear out of nowhere as a manufactured internet character. She became the most recognizable personality in an account that had already grown around landscape photography, hiking, and outdoor adventure.

What exactly are the “Nala Stomps”?
There is no evidence that “Nala Stomps” is the name of a formal dog-training trick. It is the internet’s label for a behavior Nala repeatedly performs in Chris’s videos.
The usual setup is simple:
- Chris stands with Nala positioned between or around his legs.
- He scratches or rubs near her haunches and hindquarters.
- Nala rapidly shifts, lifts, or hops her back feet.
- Chris narrates the movement with the familiar refrain, often rendered as “she stomp.”
The combination of the setup, Nala’s quick footwork, and Chris’s delighted narration creates the recognizable routine. The videos are short enough that viewers can understand the joke immediately, but repetitive enough to invite a replay.
What the footage can show is Nala’s recurring movement and her apparent willingness to participate in the interaction. It cannot, by itself, establish a veterinary explanation, prove that she was trained to do it, or show that scratching a dog’s hindquarters will reliably produce the same response.
How the routine became a viral signature
Chris had been publishing outdoor photography and hiking content before Nala became the account’s central attraction. A 2022 podcast description says he began sharing landscape photography while attending pharmacy school in 2014, later moved to Utah, and eventually decided that an outdoor lifestyle would be better with a dog.
According to contemporary 2022 reports, Chris had occasionally posted Nala’s stomping behavior before one clip broke through to a much larger audience. One report attributed more than 2.8 million views to an early viral clip and more than 11 million views to a later video. Those are historical figures reported at the time—not current TikTok analytics—and they help explain the change in the account’s publishing strategy.
Once viewers began asking for more, the stomps appeared much more frequently. The routine became a dependable hook: a familiar opening, a distinctive movement, and a punchline that could be understood without knowing anything about Nala or Chris beforehand.

That acceleration did not erase the account’s original subject matter. Hiking, camping, scenic landscapes, and the visible bond between dog and owner remained important parts of the brand. The stomp clips brought people in; the larger adventure story gave them more reasons to stay.
Why the Nala Stomps connected with viewers
No published evidence establishes one definitive psychological reason for the clips’ popularity. But several features of the format help explain why they are so easy to watch and share.

The joke is immediately legible
A viewer does not need context. Nala gets into position, her feet start moving, and Chris announces what is happening. The visual premise works even with the sound off, while the vocal refrain adds a memorable audio cue when sound is on.
The movement creates anticipation
Once viewers recognize the setup, they know what they are waiting to see. That anticipation makes the repeated motion satisfying and gives the clips natural replay value.
The interaction appears affectionate
Chris’s excitement and Nala’s apparent enthusiasm make the routine feel like a shared game rather than a trick being imposed on an unwilling animal. “Appears” is important here: an edited video cannot provide a complete behavioral or welfare assessment. The most defensible description is that the clips present a familiar, apparently positive interaction between the two.
It is easy to imitate
Viewers began identifying similar movements in their own dogs and attempting versions of the “Nala Stomp.” That is evidence of meme-like participation, not proof that all dogs perform the behavior for the same reason. A dog’s movement can reflect excitement, play, attention-seeking, scratching, discomfort, or other individual circumstances.

The stomps are only one part of the Nala story
The most durable appeal of Adventuring With Nala is the relationship and lifestyle surrounding the recurring gag. The channel catalog includes winter hikes, snow camping, backpacking trips, swimming, dog-friendly travel, and road adventures. It also includes equipment and vehicle content, such as a teardrop-trailer review and newer adventure-van material.
A 2024 podcast episode discussed Chris and Nala’s rise on social media, their broad appeal, the positive response to the pair, and the practical challenges of maintaining a creator business. The brand has maintained presences across YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook, giving the audience more than one way to follow their adventures.
In other words, the Nala Stomps function as a signature segment inside a recognizable world. The landscape photography and outdoor travel establish the setting; Nala supplies the personality; the stomps provide the repeatable comic beat.
Did Chris train Nala to do it?
The available reporting does not firmly answer that question. The evidence supports saying that Chris noticed and presented a recurring behavior that became popular with viewers. It does not support calling the stomps a formally trained trick or claiming that Nala invented the movement.

Nor is there a reliable basis for declaring the behavior typical of golden retrievers. Some secondary reports and viewer comments describe similar movements in other dogs, including other golden retrievers, but those comparisons are anecdotal rather than breed research.
The safest interpretation is also the most useful one: Nala has a distinctive recurring interaction with Chris, and the pair turned it into a memorable piece of internet culture. Owners should not force a similar response from their own dogs, especially if the dog shows signs of stress, pain, avoidance, or irritation.

The creator’s official website has offered physical merchandise, including a Nala calendar. At the time of the available research, the storefront stated that calendar pre-orders were closed and that shipping was expected to follow. That confirms a history of official merchandise, but it does not establish that a calendar or other item is currently available.
The outdoor side of the brand has also created possible commercial connections, including a Bean Trailer review and a 2026 General RV partnership involving a Storyteller Overland Beast Mode adventure van. Those references show how the channel has expanded from short dog clips into camping, travel, and vehicle storytelling; they should not be treated as a current purchase recommendation or affiliate relationship without fresh verification.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The lasting appeal of the Nala Stomps
The Nala Stomps succeeded because they compress a relationship into a few seconds. Nala’s movement is distinctive, Chris’s reaction supplies the narration, and the audience can recognize the pattern almost immediately. The format is simple enough to become a meme but personal enough to feel connected to the real dog and owner behind it.
That is why the clips are more than an isolated viral dance. They are a doorway into the larger Adventuring With Nala story: a Utah-based creator, a golden retriever who became the star of the account, and an outdoor life built around hiking, camping, travel, and companionship.

So, are the stomps a dance, a trick, or a medical phenomenon? The evidence does not justify any of those stronger labels. They are best understood as Nala’s recognizable, repeatedly filmed footwork during an affectionate interaction with Chris—and as one of the clearest examples of how an ordinary moment between a person and a dog can become an internet signature.
