YouTube supports livestreaming from a webcam, a mobile device, or an encoder; an encoder can be software or hardware. For a documentary-style stream, the right setup depends on whether you are presenting to camera, showing footage or slides, or running a pre-recorded programme.
How do I start streaming?
Choose the simplest route that fits what you want viewers to see. YouTube documents three starting points: webcam, mobile device, and encoder. An encoder is useful when you need more control over a computer-based production, but it is not a requirement for every stream.
- Webcam: A direct option for a presenter-led stream when you want a camera view and do not need a more involved scene setup.
- Mobile device: A practical route when you want to broadcast from a phone or tablet. YouTube’s mobile livestream availability and requirements can vary; check its current help information for your account and device.
- Encoder: Choose software or a hardware encoder when you need to combine sources such as a camera, gameplay, slides, or other computer content.
YouTube’s overview of these routes and encoder options is available in its live streaming encoder help.
What equipment do I need to stream?
There is no universal shopping list. Begin with the device and audio you already have, then identify a specific production problem before buying anything.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Microphone and webcam
- Microphone: Consider one if speech is difficult to hear clearly on your current setup. The sources establish microphones as an equipment category, not a best model or tested recommendation.
- Webcam: Useful when viewers should see the presenter. It is optional for streams built around narration, slides, footage, or other visuals.
Hardware encoder and production controls
A hardware encoder is an alternative to encoding with computer software, but the available guidance does not establish a universal reason to buy one or recommend a particular model. YouTube also describes the Elgato Stream Deck as a programmable USB controller with plugins and shortcuts for production. It may help if you want repeatable controls for a more involved workflow; it is not essential to go live.
Before spending, ask whether the purchase solves a real need: better audio, a camera view, a computer that struggles with software encoding, or faster control of recurring production actions.
Which streaming software should I use?
For a computer-based production, select software that works with your streaming service and the sources you need to capture. Streamlabs’ setup documentation walks through connecting an account, adding a webcam, and capturing gameplay. Its overview describes Streamlabs Desktop as supporting services including Twitch, YouTube Live, and TikTok. The Streamlabs Twitch guide is a software-specific starting point.

What settings should I use to stream on Twitch?
Use output settings that your computer and internet connection can sustain. A higher resolution or frame rate is not automatically better if the computer cannot encode it smoothly or the connection cannot upload it reliably. Streamlabs warns that settings that exceed a computer’s capabilities can cause performance problems.

Resolution and frame rate
Streamlabs recommends 1280×720 as a beginner-oriented balance between performance and image quality in its Twitch guide, while noting that 1080p can use significantly more resources. This is Streamlabs guidance, not a universal Twitch rule or a guarantee for every computer, connection, or type of content.
Encoder choice
Streamlabs distinguishes x264, which uses the CPU, from NVENC, which uses a dedicated GPU encoder. Which is more suitable depends on the available hardware and what else the computer is doing. If a game or other production workload already uses the system heavily, test output stability rather than assuming one encoder is best for every setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUpload capacity and system load
Streamlabs’ system-requirements page gives 3.6 Mbps or better for 720p at 30 fps on most platforms as a technical reference. It is vendor guidance, not a guarantee that a particular connection will deliver a stable Twitch stream. Available upload capacity, other network activity, content, running programs, and hardware all affect the result. Leave room for normal connection variation rather than treating a single speed-test result as proof of reliable streaming.

- Decide what the audience needs to see. For a presenter, start with a webcam route. For mobile coverage, start with a mobile device. For footage, slides, gameplay, or multiple sources, consider an encoder.
- Make a test stream or private rehearsal. Check that the picture, sound, and intended sources appear as expected before a public broadcast.
- Change one bottleneck at a time. If speech is unclear, address audio. If the presenter needs to be visible, consider a camera. If the computer cannot handle the production smoothly, simplify scenes or investigate encoding options before buying hardware.
- Recheck after each change. A new device, software setting, or source can change system load. Confirm the complete setup remains stable under the conditions in which you intend to stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping as a YouTube livestream around the clock, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it runs from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers the first day free.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo streams uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast a live camera feed. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. The upload is streamed as made, up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
