The strongest fighters are not all comparable by school rank: the Tensen’s Tao and regeneration, Gabimaru’s ninjutsu, and the Asaemon’s swordsmanship create very different kinds of advantages. This is an editorial ranking of peak combat capability, based on demonstrated fights, versatility, durability, and weaknesses—not an official series power list.
Yuji Kaku’s manga is complete; Shueisha’s MANGA Plus listing identifies Chapter 127 as the final chapter. [MANGA Plus] VIZ lists the series’ 2018–2021 Jump+ run and collected editions. [VIZ]

How this ranking compares fighters
Placements weigh four things: results against capable opponents, breadth and tactical value of abilities (including Tao), durability and capacity to continue fighting, and vulnerabilities or conditions that limit a fighter. Peak capability is considered, but teamwork is not credited as a solo victory: several decisive outcomes in the manga depend on allies.
The Yamada Asaemon’s numbered ranks are evidence of standing within their school, not a universal combat ladder. The official anime character page identifies Eizen as first, Shugen second, Jikka third, Shion fourth, Senta fifth, Fuchi ninth, Tenza tenth, and Sagiri twelfth; it does not rank the criminals or Tensen against them. [Official character profiles]
#1 Best Overall
Who are the 10 strongest characters in Hell’s Paradise?
1. Rien
At the top is Rien, the most formidable of the Tensen in the manga’s central conflict. Rien’s immense Tao, regeneration, and ability to adapt make the character a threat beyond the limits of ordinary swordsmanship or ninjutsu. The ranking reflects peak capability; it does not mean Rien is invulnerable, or that every confrontation is a straightforward one-on-one test.
2. Gabimaru
Gabimaru combines exceptional shinobi training with tactical creativity and the ability to keep fighting through severe injury. The official anime profile describes him as the former strongest ninja of Iwagakure. [Official character profiles] His effectiveness against supernatural opponents depends on learning how to use Tao and on adapting to each enemy’s abilities; his reputation alone does not settle every matchup.
Rank #2
3. Zhu Jin
Zhu Jin’s status as one of the Tensen brings the group’s defining advantages: Tao and extraordinary recovery. Against human opponents without a way to counter those advantages, Zhu Jin has a substantial edge. The ranking places Zhu Jin below the top two because the manga does not establish a clean, universal Tensen-versus-Tensen order; individual matchups and circumstances matter.
4. Ju Fa
Ju Fa is another Tensen whose supernatural resilience and Tao make a direct fight exceptionally difficult. The Tensen are described in official character material as immortality researchers, and each has a distinct research approach. [Official character profiles] Their strength is not just destructive force: opponents must understand and exploit the conditions behind their apparent immortality.

5. Tao Fa
Tao Fa belongs in the top tier for the same reason the other Tensen do: ordinary damage is an unreliable way to end a fight, while Tao changes what opponents need to know and do to survive. The exact ordering among Tensen is an editorial comparison, not a canonically announced ranking. A character’s position can shift with matchup, available knowledge, and support.
6. Mu Dan
Mu Dan’s Tensen abilities make the character a dangerous opponent even for skilled fighters. The threat comes from the combination of unusual techniques and the Tensen’s ability to recover, rather than from a formal school rank or a single sword skill. As with the other Tensen, victories over Mu Dan should be understood in the context of the tactics and assistance involved.
Rank #4
7. Shugen
Shugen is the highest-ranked human on this list. The official profiles place him second among the Yamada Asaemon, and Crunchyroll’s character guide also describes him as a formidable swordsman. [Official character profiles] [Crunchyroll character guide] That standing supports his inclusion among the strongest human combatants, but it does not by itself prove he outranks every criminal or Tensen.
8. Shion
Shion’s combat skill and ability to respond to threats make him one of the most capable Asaemon. He is ranked fourth within the school, behind Eizen, Shugen, and Jikka. [Official character profiles] The school’s hierarchy is useful context, but the manga’s cross-faction encounters—not the number beside his name—are the better basis for comparing him with shinobi and immortals.
Best Value
9. Yuzuriha
Yuzuriha’s strength lies in versatility as much as direct force. Her shinobi skills, deception, and judgment make her dangerous in a fight where the opponent cannot simply rely on superior toughness. She is not ranked here above the strongest Tensen or the most capable Asaemon, but her adaptability earns a place in a list focused on practical combat ability rather than raw power alone.
10. Jikka
Jikka is third in the Asaemon school’s formal hierarchy, a strong signal of his standing as a swordsman. [Official character profiles] His place at the edge of this list reflects the difference between institutional rank and demonstrated cross-faction performance: the ordinal position is relevant evidence, not a guarantee that he would beat every character ranked below or above him here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the order is not a canon power scale
The manga does not provide an official top-ten strength ranking. Asaemon ranks measure an internal school hierarchy, while the Tensen operate with abilities and durability that make comparisons to human fighters conditional. Team victories also complicate any attempt to turn outcomes into a strict ladder. These placements are best read as a reasoned comparison of peak combat potential, not as definitive answers to every hypothetical duel.
Where to continue the story
For the full context behind these matchups, read the completed manga from the beginning; VIZ lists individual volumes and a complete box set. [VIZ editions] The ranking includes developments through the final chapter, so readers who have only watched the anime should expect major spoilers.
