The phrase “Hello friends, chai pilo” spread in 2018 because a roughly 15-second clip was quoted, copied and remixed far beyond its original posting, and it was then picked up by a police department and by advertisers. The most detailed contemporaneous account is a September 2018 report by Soumya Rao for Scroll.in. It documents that reuse well, but it does not establish a single cause, the exact route to YouTube, or any current figure for the clip or its creator.
What the clip shows
The video is short, reported at about 15 seconds. Somvati Mahawar greets viewers, takes a sip of tea and remarks that it is too hot. The central line, “Hello friends, chai pilo” (“Hello friends, drink tea”), is what people went on to repeat. Scroll.in says the clip amassed “millions of views” but gives no exact count, so no precise number should be attached to it.
How the phrase was reused
The meme’s spread is easiest to understand through what people did with it. The 2018 report describes three distinct forms of reuse.
Copycat clips, jokes and remixes
Other creators and viewers borrowed the greeting-and-offer structure and swapped in different content. The phrase travelled as a template, not only as a single video, which is why it appeared in jokes, remixes and themed variations rather than in one repost.

Police and brand adaptations
On June 13, 2018, the Mumbai Police tweeted an adaptation of the catchphrase as a road-safety message: “Hello Fraaands! Helmet pehan lo… to have a Safe-Tea at home!” Scroll.in reproduces that tweet. The same report, citing Exchange4Media, names brand campaigns from Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance, ShopClues and Foodpanda that used the meme. The feature does not provide campaign performance data, so it shows that the references existed, not how well they performed.
Mahawar’s follow-up clips
Mahawar’s later clips, as the report describes them, extended the same format to other foods, inviting viewers to eat rusks, kheer, watermelon and paneer. Online speculation about her popularity is also described as a source of further attention.

How the clip reached a wider audience
Scroll.in reported on September 15, 2018 that Mahawar appeared to have begun sharing clips on Vigo Video, where she had 9,000 followers, but that her profile was no longer accessible when the report was written. The report says the route by which her video reached YouTube and began circulating widely was unclear. Treat the Vigo detail as a qualified 2018 observation. It is not a confirmed account of the first upload, and it is not evidence of a current platform presence.
Why it stuck: documented reuse versus proposed explanations
A short, repeatable phrase is easy to quote, and the greeting-and-offer format could be copied with any food or drink. The report also describes Mahawar as a reluctant star, which matters because it cuts against the idea that she engineered the moment. The article places the clip beside a framework from Kevin Alloca’s 2011 TED Talk, which proposes tastemakers, communities of participation and unexpectedness as drivers of online spread. That framework is a lens for interpretation, not proof that each mechanism operated in this case.

What the quotations and figures can support
The only full-sentence line the report reproduces with attribution is the Mumbai Police adaptation, which should be credited to the police tweet as Scroll.in reproduced it on June 13, 2018. The report does not contain a verified full-sentence quotation from Mahawar. The only reach figure is the qualitative “millions of views” from September 2018, with no organisation-verified count behind it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is not established today
- A current view count, or the date of the original upload.
- Mahawar’s current identity, account ownership or audience. The descriptions above are 2018 accounts and have not been verified as current.
- Whether the Vigo Video profile still exists or is active.
- A single definitive cause for the meme’s spread.
The tea in the catchphrase is part of the joke, not a product recommendation, and the story should be read as a record of 2018 reuse rather than a current profile of the creator.
