Heidi Swedberg’s character, Susan Ross, was killed off Seinfeld after cast members reportedly struggled to find a shared comic rhythm with her. That explanation comes from co-star Jason Alexander’s retrospective account—not from Swedberg—and it does not establish how she felt about leaving. After the show, she continued acting before turning increasingly toward music and ukulele teaching, according to reports published from 2015 to 2019.
Why was Susan Ross killed off Seinfeld?
Swedberg played Susan, George Costanza’s girlfriend and fiancée. In a 2015 interview with Howard Stern, Jason Alexander said he found it difficult to play scenes opposite her because their instincts about where the comedy lay did not align. “I couldn’t figure out how to play off of her. Her instincts for doing a scene, where the comedy was, and mine were always misfiring,” he said, as quoted by The Independent.

Alexander said Jerry Seinfeld and Julia Louis-Dreyfus later worked with Swedberg and shared that difficulty. According to his account, Louis-Dreyfus proposed killing Susan off, and co-creator Larry David agreed. Susan died in the seventh-season finale after licking the glue on inexpensive wedding-invitation envelopes. The account is Alexander’s recollection of how the decision came about, rather than a neutral production record or Swedberg’s explanation.
Alexander also said he liked Swedberg personally. After the story drew attention, he apologized for telling it in a way that could diminish her, describing her as generous and gracious. The episode of Susan’s death became an especially memorable plot turn, but the behind-the-scenes story describes a reported mismatch in performance rhythms—not a public account from Swedberg of why she left.

What did Swedberg do after Seinfeld?
She continued acting
Swedberg did not stop acting when Seinfeld ended her role in 1997. A 2015 Independent report names later appearances in Roswell, Gilmore Girls, and Bones. A 2019 Esquire profile describes her acting career as spanning about two decades and says she eventually left Hollywood behind.
Music and ukulele became a larger part of her work
The Esquire profile reports that Swedberg taught ukulele at schools and libraries around the country, performed at ukulele festivals, and was involved with the Sukey Jump Band. It connects her turn toward music and teaching to making music with her children, quoting a biography on her website: “Having children re-focused her life. Singing and playing ukulele with them brought her so much joy that she found herself drifting away from auditions and into the classroom.”

Esquire also reproduced Swedberg’s comments from a 2014 Ukulele magazine profile. She contrasted acting with music, calling music “a basic form of human communication” and saying, “Music is essential in keeping us human, in keeping us connected—connected within our own culture, and connected to other cultures.” The shift was not simply from acting to a different job: the profile presents music-making with her children as part of what drew her toward teaching and performance.

The available reporting establishes that she taught ukulele and performed at festivals as described in Esquire’s 2019 profile. It does not establish her present-day schedule, so it is not possible to say from those reports whether she still teaches. The same profile says Swedberg did not respond to its requests for comment, leaving her own detailed perspective on the circumstances of Susan’s departure undocumented there.
