Tina Turner’s signature combination of big hair, high heels and short skirts was more than a stage look: she described clothing as a way to express herself and move freely. In reflections attributed to her book That’s My Life, she connected her changing clothes to the story of her life and to the freedom she wanted onstage.

What Tina Turner said her style meant

Turner described fashion as personal expression, not a fixed uniform. “I always loved experimenting with style, trying everything from sculptural Alaïas to flowing Armanis. I’m always thinking about fashion, from my wigs to my shoes, and everything in between. It’s a form of personal expression for me.” The PerthNow feature attributes this passage to That’s My Life, though it does not identify a page number or edition. Read the PerthNow feature.

Her explanation also tied clothes to movement. Recalling the gowns she wore early in her performing career, Turner said: “I felt so elegant in my gown, like a princess. But that gown was a prison, just like my marriage. I wanted to move, so my skirts got shorter and less constricting because freedom was important to me, onstage and in life.” These are her words as quoted by PerthNow; they place the change in her wardrobe within her own account of a difficult marriage and her desire for freedom, rather than suggesting that clothing alone brought about her independence.

How her stage image took shape

The big hair, heels and short skirts became recognizable elements of Turner’s public image, but they were part of a wider and changing wardrobe. A June 2023 Observer retrospective describes different periods and looks, from early gowns to later miniskirts and fringe, and includes outfits associated with designers Bob Mackie and Azzedine Alaïa. Those examples illustrate the range of her fashion over time; they are not a complete inventory of what she wore. See the Observer fashion retrospective.

Why the look was more than a trademark

Turner’s own account offers a personal meaning behind the visual signature: she wanted clothes that reflected a free spirit, and she valued silhouettes that let her move. She also described experimenting across materials and designers, from natural fibres and embellishments to sculptural and flowing shapes. The result was not simply one costume repeated, but a style she understood as connected to expression, performance and the life she had lived.
