Hedda is a 2025 drama written and directed by Nia DaCosta, with Tessa Thompson in the title role. It reimagines Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, moving the story from 19th-century Norway to 1950s England and recasting Eilert Lovborg as Eileen, Hedda’s former lover.
What is Hedda about?
Prime Video’s official synopsis describes Hedda as torn between an old love and the stifling quality of her present life. Over the course of one charged night, repressed desires, manipulation, passion and betrayal come to the surface. The film’s story centers on Hedda’s efforts to navigate a life shaped by her own choices as well as the limits society places on her.
DaCosta and Thompson have described Hedda as a complicated, morally troubling figure rather than an uncomplicated heroine. In an Associated Press interview, DaCosta said, “Even though I love Hedda, she’s unforgivable and undefendable. But she’s valid.”
Is Hedda based on Hedda Gabler?
Yes. The film is a modern reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s play. Its central interest in desire, confinement and social expectations carries into DaCosta’s version, but the setting and relationships are recast. Amazon’s creator interview presents power, lust, jealousy, manipulation and betrayal as themes of the film; those are the filmmakers’ own descriptions of their approach.

Readers who want to compare the adaptation with its source can start with a printed edition of Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler. The film’s official Prime Video listing and Amazon’s creator interview identify the play as its source.
How does DaCosta’s film differ from the play?
| Element | Ibsen’s play | DaCosta’s film |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | 19th-century Norway | 1950s England |
| Lovborg | Eilert Lovborg, a man | Eileen Lovborg, a woman and Hedda’s former lover |
| Focus reported by the AP | Hedda’s story is surrounded by male characters | DaCosta described centering three women and their different responses to social pressure |
In the film, Eileen arrives with a new girlfriend, Thea Clifton, played by Imogen Poots. The shift makes Hedda’s relationship with Eileen part of the story’s exploration of constrained agency and social pressure. The three-women framing is an interpretation reported by the Associated Press through comments from DaCosta and Thompson, not a definitive account of the film’s meaning.
The available reporting supports these broad contrasts, but not a scene-by-scene account of which plot events the film retains or changes. For that level of comparison, the play and film themselves are the appropriate references.
