Spoilers for all 13 episodes of the anime’s first season; no later-manga spoilers. The ending of Heavenly Delusion is a deliberate stopping point, not a complete answer to the series’ mysteries. Maru and Kiruko reunite after the Robin incident and set out together, while the academy storyline leaves important questions open. The episode closes the season’s immediate journey without resolving the larger story.
What happens at the end of Heavenly Delusion?
In the outside-world story, Maru confronts Robin after the events that separated him and Kiruko. Kiruko stops Maru from killing Robin. Maru and Kiruko then leave together, reconnected but not free of the consequences of what has happened.

Their departure points back toward the journey they were already making: searching for Heaven in a devastated world. It is a continuation, not a destination. The finale does not present their reunion as a cure for Kiruko’s trauma or a resolution of the danger and uncertainty surrounding them.
Why does the finale leave so much unanswered?
The anime follows two intercut stories: Maru and Kiruko’s travels outside, and children growing up inside a protected institution. That contrast is central to the season, but the finale does not explain every connection between the two storylines. It leaves questions of identity, chronology and future fate unresolved rather than supplying one definitive explanation.

#1 Best Overall
It is useful to separate what the episode shows from what viewers may infer. The reunion and the decision to leave together are events in the outside-world thread. Any claim that the finale definitively settles the academy’s mysteries—or explains every relationship between its characters and the outside world—goes beyond what this anime endpoint establishes. The open questions are part of where the season stops, not evidence of a hidden, fully confirmed answer in the episode.
Why does Season 1 end at Episode 13?
Director Hirotaka Mori explained the production choice in a Crunchyroll News interview published May 25, 2024. The manga was still ongoing when the anime needed an ending, so the team considered different stopping points. Mori said that ending much earlier would leave too many loose ends, while adapting farther into the story would make it harder to find a suitable landing point. He said, “Episode 13’s ending was our best option.”
Rank #2
Mori also said he consulted manga creator Masakazu Ishiguro about the story’s plans, but received only a limited hint and still had to devise an endpoint for the adaptation. That explains the shape of the finale: it gives the season a place to stop without claiming to conclude the wider narrative.
What does the ending mean for Maru and Kiruko?
Maru and Kiruko leave together after a rupture in their partnership. That gives their story a near-term direction, but not a promise that everything between them is repaired. Kiruko’s intervention prevents Maru from killing Robin; the choice does not undo the harm surrounding the encounter or settle what comes next for either of them.

The most grounded reading is therefore modest: the pair choose to continue their journey together, while the anime leaves the emotional and practical consequences in progress. Treating their departure as a final resolution would mistake a season ending for a series ending.

The anime adapts Masakazu Ishiguro’s manga. Crunchyroll’s February 3, 2023 cast and premiere announcement identifies Denpa as the publisher of the official English-language edition. However, the source material cited here does not verify the exact chapter or volume corresponding to the anime’s endpoint. There is no reliable starting volume to name on that basis alone.
Rank #4
If you want to continue beyond the anime, look for the official English Heavenly Delusion manga, but check the contents of the edition you choose rather than assuming a specific volume begins immediately after Episode 13. The interview establishes that the manga was ongoing when the adaptation’s endpoint was planned; it does not itself map the anime’s final scenes to a volume.
