Spoilers for Season 1, Episode 6, “The Cottage.” The finale changes Shane and Ilya’s relationship from a private, carefully guarded affair into a mutual commitment with a future plan—and a truth shared with Shane’s parents. It does not make them publicly out: Shane says he is not ready for that step.

What happens in “The Cottage”

In the Season 1 finale, Shane and Ilya spend time together at the cottage after Ilya accepts Shane’s invitation. The quiet gives them room to say plainly what their earlier encounters left unsaid. Ilya admits that, despite being surrounded by beautiful women, he wishes they were Shane. When Shane asks whether he wants that feeling to go away, Ilya says he never wants Shane to go away.

They talk about how they could spend more time together while keeping the relationship private. One possibility is Shane transferring to Ottawa; they also consider changing the public story around their rivalry. Their conversation becomes a commitment when they tell each other “I love you” for the first time.

Why the finale changes the relationship

The shift is not simply that the two men become more honest about their feelings. They begin to imagine a workable shared future, rather than treating their relationship as a series of secret meetings. The contrast with Episode 5, “I’ll Believe in Anything,” makes that change clear:

Ilya tells Shane he is in love with him, but fears what an openly gay relationship could mean for his ability to return to Russia. They say “I love you” to each other and discuss practical ways to be together more often.
Their reunion takes place around the All-Star Game, after Shane acknowledges his sexuality to Rose. Time alone at the cottage lets them consider a future beyond the immediate reunion.
After Ilya’s father dies and he returns to the United States, Shane is injured in a game and invites him to the cottage. Ilya eventually accepts. Shane’s father catches them kissing, leading Shane to tell his parents the truth.

Episode 5 supplies the emotional turning point; Episode 6 turns that honesty into a relationship plan and a family disclosure. The distinction matters: being open with Shane’s parents is not the same as being ready to come out to the public.

Shane tells his parents—but not the public

Shane’s father interrupts the couple’s private escape after catching them kissing. Shane then tells his parents that he is gay and in a relationship with Ilya. They respond supportively, resolving an important emotional barrier within his family.

But Shane says he is not ready to come out publicly. The finale therefore gives the couple a meaningful step forward without erasing the pressures surrounding their personal and professional lives. Their relationship can be acknowledged at home while remaining private beyond it.

Why the finale takes a quieter approach

The episode favors time together and small exchanges over a dramatic public declaration. In a TheWrap interview published December 25, 2025, creator Jacob Tierney described the approach: “The whole episode was built around the idea that if these two have chemistry, I can just point a camera at them and let it happen … so when we got there and it was working, it felt like bliss.” That creative choice suits a finale whose central change is intimacy: Shane and Ilya get to exist together, talk about what comes next, and let the relationship be known to his family.

Where the story comes from

The television series adapts Rachel Reid’s Game Changers books, including her novel Heated Rivalry, as noted in an Associated Press interview. The screen version gives this finale its own emphasis on the couple’s quiet time together and Shane’s conversation with his parents; the book is a separate way to spend more time with the source story.
