Hear Beyoncé’s Revelatory Version of The Beatles’ “Blackbird”

Beyoncé’s “BLACKBIIRD” is more than a Beatles cover: it preserves elements of Paul McCartney’s original while shifting the song toward a multivoiced statement by four Black women country artists.

Beyoncé’s “BLACKBIIRD” is not simply a polished cover of The Beatles’ “Blackbird.” Released on COWBOY CARTER on March 29, 2024, it preserves recognizable elements of the 1968 recording—including Paul McCartney’s guitar and foot taps—while shifting the song’s vocal center toward Beyoncé and four contemporary Black women country artists: Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer, Tiera Kennedy, and Reyna Roberts.

The result is a multivoiced conversation about musical inheritance, civil-rights history, and who gets to occupy the center of American country music.

A familiar “Blackbird,” heard differently

“BLACKBIIRD” is track two on Beyoncé’s 27-track COWBOY CARTER, arriving immediately after the album’s opening statement, “AMERIICAN REQUIEM.” That placement matters. Before the record moves through country, gospel, blues, folk, R&B, hip-hop, and opera-influenced sounds, Beyoncé places this reworked Beatles song near the front of the album as an early declaration of lineage and purpose.

The first musical clue is familiarity. The acoustic guitar and foot-tapping pulse connect the recording to The Beatles’ “Blackbird,” originally released on November 22, 1968, on the double album The Beatles, commonly known as the White Album. But the track soon makes its difference clear: this is not a detached standard being reproduced for nostalgia. It is a carefully assembled cover in which an old recording becomes the foundation for a new ensemble statement.

The official production credits identify Beyoncé and Paul McCartney as producers, with Khirye Tyler as additional producer. The arrangement adds Beyoncé’s lead vocal, layered voices, strings, violin, bass, and additional sound design around elements of the Beatles recording. McCartney’s contribution should be described precisely: his guitar and foot-tapping performance are retained in the production. This is not evidence that he recorded an entirely new instrumental session for Beyoncé’s version.

Who sings on “BLACKBIIRD”?

Beyoncé is joined by four Black women working in or adjacent to contemporary country music:

  • Tanner Adell
  • Brittney Spencer
  • Tiera Kennedy
  • Reyna Roberts

That personnel list is central to the song’s meaning. The featured singers are not anonymous backing vocals placed behind a superstar. Their presence changes the performance’s perspective and gives the cover an explicitly collective character.

Beyoncé leads softly rather than turning the song into a conventional vocal showcase. The other voices widen the sound, making the performance feel less like one artist borrowing a canonical composition and more like several generations of Black women entering a musical conversation that has often excluded or minimized them.

That interpretation is grounded in the recording’s credits and arrangement, not in a claim about Beyoncé’s private motives. The song itself makes the argument through its sound: the familiar Beatles framework remains audible, but the vocal emphasis has moved.

Why the civil-rights history matters

Paul McCartney has repeatedly connected “Blackbird” to the civil-rights movement. In a statement issued on April 4, 2024, after Beyoncé’s recording was released, he explained that the song was inspired by footage he saw in the early 1960s of Black girls being turned away from school. He also said that Beyoncé’s version reinforced the civil-rights message that had inspired him to write it.

The original song was recorded on June 11, 1968, and released later that year, during a period of intense civil-rights conflict. Its themes of perseverance, freedom, and overcoming exclusion therefore are not merely retrospective associations added by later listeners; they are part of the context McCartney himself has described.

There is, however, an important distinction between documented intention and overconfident interpretation. It is accurate to say that McCartney described “Blackbird” as civil-rights-inspired. It is less precise to insist that the song definitively represents one particular historical person unless that narrower claim is supported separately. Beyoncé’s version does not require that speculation. By foregrounding four Black women country performers, it creates its own clear connection between the song’s history and the continuing question of representation.

From Beatles folk song to a Black country ensemble

COWBOY CARTER treats country as part of a much larger American musical family. Its covers include Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” Chuck Berry’s “Oh Louisiana,” and The Beatles’ “Blackbird,” alongside original songs and collaborations drawing from gospel, blues, folk, R&B, hip-hop, and other traditions.

In that setting, “BLACKBIIRD” functions as both homage and reclamation. The composition comes from a British rock group and is associated with one of the best-known albums in popular-music history. Beyoncé then places it inside an album concerned with the boundaries of country music and the Black musicians whose contributions to American genres have often been overlooked.

The track’s casting makes the connection unusually direct. Rather than using “Blackbird” only to demonstrate that Beyoncé can move convincingly across genres, the recording gives four contemporary Black women country artists a prominent place within one of the year’s most visible albums. The result challenges the idea that Beyoncé’s country project is simply a genre exercise. It presents country music as a history with contested authorship, overlapping traditions, and more participants than its narrowest public image suggests.

That is why the song can sound reverent without being merely conservative. The original remains recognizable, but the performance center shifts. Beyoncé does not erase the Beatles’ recording; she uses its authority and history to make room for voices that have not always received comparable space in country music.

McCartney welcomed Beyoncé’s version

McCartney publicly endorsed “BLACKBIIRD” on April 4, 2024, calling it a “magnificent” version and saying that it strengthened the civil-rights message behind the original. He also said that he spoke with Beyoncé by FaceTime after she thanked him for writing the song and allowing her to record it.

His response is significant because it confirms that the recording was welcomed by one of the song’s authors. But it should not be overstated. McCartney did not become a co-writer of a newly composed Beyoncé song, and the available credits do not indicate that he performed a newly recorded full instrumental accompaniment for the cover. The production instead incorporates his guitar and foot-tapping track from the original recording.

What the title “BLACKBIIRD” signals

The doubled i follows the visual naming style used throughout COWBOY CARTER. It distinguishes Beyoncé’s recording from the Beatles’ original while keeping the relationship unmistakable.

The altered spelling is more than a search-friendly variation or a decorative typographical choice. It marks the song as part of the album’s “act ii” identity: a continuation, transformation, and recontextualization of an existing musical history. The title says, in effect, that listeners are hearing “Blackbird,” but not encountering it in exactly the same cultural position.

Chart impact and cultural visibility

“BLACKBIIRD” debuted at No. 6 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart in April 2024. The chart result returned the Lennon-McCartney composition to the chart’s top 10 as a credited work and placed Beyoncé’s recording among a large group of COWBOY CARTER tracks charting simultaneously.

The album itself debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart dated April 13, 2024. Beyoncé became the first Black woman to lead that chart. Those numbers do not prove that every listener heard the song in the same way, nor do they replace musical analysis. They do show the scale of the platform on which “BLACKBIIRD” presented its argument about genre, race, and musical inheritance.

Purple Rain
  • Prince designed "Purple Rain" as the project that would make him a superstar, and surprisingly, that is exactly what happened. Simultaneously more focused and ambitious than any of his previous records, "Purple Rain" finds Prince consolidating his funk and R&B roots while moving boldly into pop, rock, and heavy metal with nine superbly crafted songs. Although Prince's songwriting is at a peak, the presence of the Revolution pulls the music into sharper focus, giving it a tougher, more aggressive edge. Even with all of his new, but uncompromising, forays into pop Prince hasn't abandoned funk. Taken together, all of the stylistic experiments add up to a stunning statement of purpo

How to listen for the arrangement

  1. Start with the opening texture. Listen for the acoustic guitar and foot-tapping elements that connect the track to the 1968 Beatles recording.
  2. Notice the changed vocal center. Beyoncé’s lead is intentionally restrained, allowing the ensemble rather than solo virtuosity to define the performance.
  3. Identify the added layers. Strings, violin, bass, layered vocals, and sound design expand the spare folk framework without burying its recognizable core.
  4. Listen to the guest voices as named artists. Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer, Tiera Kennedy, and Reyna Roberts are part of the song’s statement, not interchangeable background texture.
  5. Place the song back inside COWBOY CARTER. Hearing it after “AMERIICAN REQUIEM” and alongside the album’s other genre crossings makes its role clearer than hearing it as an isolated Beatles cover.

For a direct comparison, listen to the Beatles’ “Blackbird” first and then Beyoncé’s “BLACKBIIRD.” The contrast is most revealing when treated as a question of emphasis rather than a simple before-and-after test: what remains, what is added, and whose voices now carry the song?

For listeners who want the album as an object, the COWBOY CARTER vinyl is the most direct physical edition to seek out. The official Beyoncé store lists a two-LP release, while retailer descriptions have identified extras such as a photo booklet and poster. Check the current edition, pressing, price, shipping territory, and stock status before purchasing.

Readers making the comparison can also look for The Beatles White Album on vinyl or CD. The original album is useful context because it places “Blackbird” in its 1968 setting; it is a secondary recommendation, not a substitute for hearing Beyoncé’s reworking on COWBOY CARTER.

The larger significance of “BLACKBIIRD”

The power of Beyoncé’s recording comes from the precision of its choices. She keeps enough of the Beatles’ original to preserve the song’s historical identity, uses McCartney’s own performance as part of the bridge between versions, and then changes the performance’s social and vocal center.

That combination makes “BLACKBIIRD” both a cover and a critical intervention. It honors a song McCartney wrote in response to the civil-rights struggle while placing Black women country singers at the center of its contemporary expression. It connects British rock history to American country history without pretending those traditions developed separately.

Most importantly, the track does not ask listeners to choose between reverence for the original and recognition of the new performance. Its argument is that musical inheritance can be shared, challenged, and expanded. The blackbird still carries the memory of the Beatles’ song—but on Beyoncé’s version, it sings with more than one voice.
