Sheldon’s stunned reaction to George’s death is not meant to show that he is indifferent. The scene’s emotional point is the ordinary goodbye Sheldon missed that morning: after George leaves for work without Sheldon looking up from his book, Sheldon later understands that this was the last time he saw his father. Young Sheldon co-creator Chuck Lorre described that everyday moment as something Sheldon would regret.
Which episode shows Sheldon learning about George’s death?
The scene is in season 7, episode 12, “A New Home and a Traditional Texas Torture.” George dies after suffering a heart attack at school, and his family receives the news. Earlier that day, he had left home for work while Sheldon stayed absorbed in his book and did not say goodbye.

That sequence gives Sheldon’s reaction its particular weight: an ordinary departure becomes the last time he sees his father.
What did Young Sheldon co-creator Chuck Lorre say?
A secondary report attributed to an interview with USA Today quotes Lorre explaining that the farewell was intentionally mundane:

#1 Best Overall
“It was purposely a banal nothing moment in Sheldon’s life that he will struggle with. Because he learns it’s the last time he’ll ever see his father. He will live to regret that moment in his life where he’ll say, ‘I could have done that better.’”
The report identifies Lorre as a co-creator of Young Sheldon. The quotation is available here through that secondary account; the primary USA Today interview was not retrieved, so the wording should be understood as reported rather than independently checked against the interview.

Why is Sheldon so quiet after hearing the news?
Lorre’s explanation points to the missed goodbye and the regret Sheldon will feel later, rather than indifference. The scene does not establish every feeling Sheldon has in that moment, nor does it provide a clinical explanation for his response. A more restrained reading is that the news leaves him stunned, while the audience knows that his last interaction with George was an everyday moment he did not recognize as final.

In the scene’s immediate context, Sheldon is reading and does not look up when George leaves for work. The significance comes afterward: Sheldon could not know that this would be his final chance to acknowledge his father. Lorre’s reported explanation focuses on the regret that follows that realization, not on a deliberate choice to reject George.
