In a statement reported after David Lynch’s death, Nicolas Cage called the filmmaker “a singular genius in cinema” and ended with the words, “He will always be solid gold.” The two worked together on Lynch’s 1990 film Wild at Heart, in which Cage starred.

The Los Angeles Times reported Cage’s tribute on January 16, 2025. Cage’s statement read: “David was a singular genius in cinema, one of the greatest artists of this or any time. He was brave, brilliant, and a maverick with a joyful sense of humor. I never had more fun on a film set than working with David Lynch. He will always be solid gold.”

The closing phrase was part of a statement attributed to Cage, not an interview transcript. Its praise is personal and direct: Cage remembered Lynch both as an artist and as a collaborator on a film set.
How Cage and Lynch worked together on Wild at Heart
Lynch wrote and directed Wild at Heart, with Cage among its cast. The Festival de Cannes records the film as a U.S. entry in competition at the 1990 festival, where it won the Palme d’Or. The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures lists its runtime as 125 minutes and also names Laura Dern among the cast.

The film follows Sailor Ripley, played by Cage, and Lula Fortune, played by Dern, as they set out together after Sailor’s release from prison. Lula’s mother hires a hit man to kill him, putting danger in the path of their flight.

Criterion lists a 4K UHD special edition featuring a new 4K restoration supervised by cinematographer Frederick Elmes and approved by the David Lynch Estate. The listing establishes the edition and restoration details, but not current stock or marketplace availability.
