To improve HDR live video on YouTube, preserve genuine HDR from the source through the encoder: use HDR footage or output, encode in HEVC/H.265 at 10-bit with the correct PQ or HLG color signaling, and send a bitrate your connection can sustain. A setting labeled “HDR” cannot turn an SDR source into genuine HDR. Then check YouTube’s stream health and verify playback on an HDR-capable device.
What makes a live stream genuinely HDR?
HDR is a signal chain, not a switch that improves any video. The camera or game must produce HDR, the encoder must preserve it, and the stream must carry compatible color information. If any part of the chain treats HDR as SDR—or assigns the wrong transfer function or color metadata—the image can look washed out, too bright, or otherwise incorrect.
Start with the source
- For camera video, confirm in the camera manual that it can record or output HDR in PQ or HLG. A product marketed as “HDR” is not enough to establish compatibility.
- For gameplay, confirm the game is outputting HDR and that the display and capture path support that output.
- Do not enable an HDR option on an SDR-only source and assume the result is genuine HDR. The setting cannot recover HDR information that the source does not contain.
Keep the picture and delivery problems separate
Source format, encoding, and color signaling determine whether the picture is HDR and how it looks. Upload capacity, encoder performance, and ingestion health determine whether viewers receive the stream smoothly. A stream that buffers may have a delivery problem even when its HDR settings are correct; a smooth stream can still have incorrect color handling.
Configure the YouTube HDR signal chain
The following specifications are for YouTube Live, not universal requirements for every streaming platform. YouTube’s HDR guidance calls for HEVC/H.265 and 10-bit video. Its OBS instructions describe an RTMP workflow and specify OBS version 30.1 or later, a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10, P010 (4:2:0), and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG; YouTube recommends HLG in those instructions.

OBS settings described by YouTube
- Use OBS 30.1 or later for the RTMP workflow described in YouTube’s instructions.
- Select a hardware HEVC/H.265 encoder that supports HDR.
- Set the encoder profile to Main 10 and the pixel format to P010 (4:2:0).
- Set the color space to Rec. 2100 PQ or Rec. 2100 HLG. YouTube recommends HLG in its OBS instructions.
- Match the transfer function and range to the actual source. Do not label PQ footage as HLG, or vice versa, merely to satisfy a setting.
- Set bitrate, keyframe interval, and the stream protocol for the resolution, frame rate, and encoder you are using.
YouTube notes that the Live Control Room preview does not display HDR colors. Do not use that preview alone to decide whether the delivered image is displaying HDR correctly.
Color metadata for YouTube HLS
YouTube’s HLS specification calls for M2TS-muxed media, 1–4 second segments, H.264 or HEVC video, and a closed GOP. For HDR over HLS, it specifies HEVC, 10-bit YUV 4:2:0, PQ or HLG, Rec. 2020 primaries, and a Rec. 2020 non-constant-luminance matrix. Preserve the source’s actual transfer function and range; HDR is not just a resolution or bitrate setting.

Choose a bitrate YouTube recommends—and your connection can hold
The figures below are YouTube’s recommended encoder settings, accessed 2026-10-03; the help page did not expose a publication date. They are platform recommendations, not universal quality thresholds. The AV1 and H.265 column gives YouTube’s listed minimum and recommended bitrate; the H.264 column gives its corresponding recommended bitrate.

Use the row for your actual output resolution and frame rate, and the column for your codec. YouTube recommends a speed test to assess upload bitrate. If your connection cannot sustain the selected rate reliably, reduce the target or improve the network before raising quality settings. A nominal speed test result is not a guarantee that the connection will remain stable during a live broadcast.

Keyframes and protocol
- YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe frequency; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- YouTube generally recommends RTMPS. For HDR, it recommends H.265 over RTMP(S). If your encoder does not support HDR over that path, YouTube lists HLS as an option, subject to its HLS requirements.
- YouTube says 4K/2160 streams are optimized for quality at normal latency; low-latency optimization is unavailable at that resolution. If low latency is essential, weigh that constraint when choosing your output resolution.
Diagnose washed-out color, softness, buffering, and stutter
Use the symptom to identify which part of the chain to inspect. YouTube’s health diagnostics can report configuration problems such as low bitrate or a frame-rate mismatch; ingestion starvation can cause buffering.
If the image looks washed out or is not recognized as HDR
- Verify that the camera or game output is genuinely HDR in PQ or HLG.
- Confirm that the encoder is sending HEVC/H.265 at 10-bit, using a compatible HDR workflow.
- Check that transfer function, color primaries, matrix, and range match the source and delivery path. For YouTube HLS HDR, the specified primaries and matrix are Rec. 2020 and Rec. 2020 non-constant-luminance.
- Do not judge HDR color from the Live Control Room preview; test playback on a known HDR-capable device instead.
If the image is soft or the stream stutters
- Check YouTube’s health status for low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, GOP, or ingestion warnings and correct the indicated encoder or input issue.
- Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Run an upload speed test and lower the target if the connection cannot sustain it.
- Check that encoder output frame rate matches the intended stream frame rate and that the encoder is keeping up.
If viewers report buffering
Inspect upload stability and YouTube’s ingestion health rather than assuming HDR is the cause. If the encoder is starving the ingest, the stream may buffer even when its color settings are correct. Reduce the bitrate or resolution, or improve the network path, then check health status again.

Verify what viewers actually receive
- Watch the live stream on a device known to support HDR playback.
- Open the player’s quality menu and look for the HDR label.
- Compare the HDR-capable device’s playback with an SDR fallback separately. YouTube says supported devices display HDR automatically; unsupported devices receive SDR.
A viewer without compatible playback equipment may not see HDR even when the stream is correctly configured. That is a playback limitation, not necessarily a fault in the broadcast signal.

- Source: Does the camera or game output PQ or HLG HDR?
- Encoder: Can it produce HEVC Main 10 and preserve the required color signaling?
- Resolution and frame rate: What output do you need, and can the encoder and connection sustain it?
- Protocol: Does the encoder support YouTube’s HDR path over RTMP(S), or will you use HLS?
- Latency: Is normal latency acceptable, particularly if you plan to stream at 4K?
- Viewers: Are the intended viewers likely to use HDR-capable playback devices?
If buying a camera for camera-based HDR streaming, search for an HDR video camera and verify PQ or HLG support in its manual. The label alone does not establish that a particular model will work with your capture and encoder path.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does HDR streaming require 4K?
No. The YouTube settings cited here include HDR-capable encoding requirements and bitrate recommendations at several resolutions; 4K is not itself what makes a signal HDR.
Can an SDR video be made into real HDR by changing encoder settings?
No. Genuine HDR must be present in the source and preserved through a compatible encoding path; an HDR toggle cannot add missing source information.
