The series behind the “HBO might have found its own Tiger King” comparison is Chimp Crazy, a four-part HBO documentary series directed and produced by Eric Goode, the filmmaker behind Tiger King. It follows exotic-animal broker Tonia Haddix and her relationships with captive chimpanzees, as well as a dispute involving authorities and an animal-rights group. The comparison points to a shared filmmaker and a high-stakes animal story—not identical subjects or a proven match in reception.
What is Chimp Crazy about?
HBO’s July 2024 announcement centers the series on Tonia Haddix, a former nurse turned exotic-animal broker who cares for chimpanzees in captivity. HBO says Haddix describes herself as the “Dolly Parton of chimps.” The story follows her attachment to a particular chimpanzee and a conflict involving authorities and an animal-rights group. HBO’s announcement introduces the series; Apple TV’s listing describes its broader focus as the world of raising chimpanzees and the people involved. Apple TV’s series listing says the first episode, “Monkey Love,” follows Haddix as she fights to retain custody of seven chimpanzees.

Why is it being compared with Tiger King?
The clearest connection is Eric Goode: he directed and executive-produced Chimp Crazy and is the filmmaker behind Tiger King. BGR’s July 2024 archive characterized the new series as a Tiger King-like docuseries from the same filmmaker. That is a useful shorthand for the connection, not evidence that the series have the same subject, approach, or audience reception. BGR’s July 2024 description supplies the comparison; HBO’s own synopsis establishes Chimp Crazy’s focus on captive chimpanzees and Haddix.
