Neither service is automatically better for every household. Start with the specific shows, films, and documentaries you want to watch, then compare the plans and checkout prices actually offered in your country. In the United States, Max’s published plans spell out prices and features; Paramount+ plan details differ by market, and the cited official page does not establish current US prices. Catalogs rotate, too, so a title associated with a network or studio is not proof that it is streaming on either service today.
Start with the titles you actually want to watch
For a documentary viewer, the most useful comparison is not a claim that one service has a bigger or better catalog. The available official information does not establish a complete, dated catalog for Paramount+ or a reliable title-by-title overlap between the services. Instead, compare the actual titles you would watch during the months you plan to subscribe.
Max describes a catalog that brings together HBO series and films, Max Originals, and selected programming associated with Warner Bros., DC, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, and Discovery-related brands such as HGTV, Food Network, TLC, ID, Magnolia Network, and Discovery. Its programming guidance says most new HBO shows and films are available on Max when they air on HBO, but it also cautions that some titles are available only for a limited time. See Max’s programming and catalog guidance.
That mix may be relevant if the documentaries you want are from channels or brands in Max’s stated catalog. It is not a guarantee that a particular documentary is currently available, nor that every title associated with those brands is included. Paramount+ should be checked title by title in the same way; the available official plan information does not provide a dated catalog inventory that supports a broader comparison.

These brand groupings are useful as a starting point, not as a substitute for a title search. A film associated with Warner Bros., a DC property, a Cartoon Network show, or a Discovery channel is not necessarily included at the moment you check. Likewise, a show associated with Paramount+ is not confirmed as available simply because of that association. The right question is not which studio names appear on a service’s page, but whether the particular season, film, or version you plan to watch is included where you live.
Make a short watchlist before you subscribe
- Write down the few documentaries, films, and series your household most wants to watch. Include titles for more than one person if you are sharing the subscription.
- Search each service’s current app or website for every title. Confirm the exact title and, where relevant, the season or version—not just the network or studio associated with it.
- Check whether a title is included with the plan you intend to buy. Do not assume availability from a brand name, an old listing, or a search result that may describe a different country or a past date.
- Compare the resulting watchlists. If one service has most of your near-term picks, it may be the better subscription for now; you can reassess when you have watched them or the catalog changes.
For a more useful comparison, mark each title as “available,” “not found,” or “uncertain,” and note the season or version you checked. If a title is central to your choice but the listing is ambiguous, confirm it inside the service before paying. This avoids treating a search-engine result, a dated article, or a title page from another country as proof of current access.
Also consider when you expect to watch your list. Max says some movies and shows are available only for a limited time. That means a long annual commitment may be a poor match if you are subscribing for just one or two titles and are unsure how long they will remain. A shorter subscription period can make more sense when the plan terms and local price support it, then you can reassess once you have watched your picks.
What the published plan details say
The plan comparison below is deliberately geography-qualified. Max’s figures are from its US help page. Paramount+’s cited support page describes selected international markets and does not establish current US pricing or terms. It would be misleading to treat the international Paramount+ features as a US plan comparison.
| Service and market | Plan | Published price or features |
|---|---|---|
| Max, United States | Basic with Ads | $9.99/month or $99.99/year; two simultaneous streams; Full HD. |
| Max, United States | Standard | $16.99/month or $169.99/year; two simultaneous streams; Full HD; 30 downloads; select live sports. |
| Max, United States | Premium | $20.99/month or $209.99/year; four simultaneous streams; 100 downloads; 4K UHD and Dolby Atmos where available; select live sports. |
| Paramount+, selected markets listed on its support page | Basic with Ads | One simultaneous stream in the markets specified on the page. The page lists Australia, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the UK, and Ireland. |
| Paramount+, selected markets listed on its support page | Standard | Two streams, Full HD, ad-free streaming, and downloads in listed markets, including Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Switzerland, the UK, and Latin America. |
| Paramount+, selected markets listed on its support page | Premium | Four streams and 4K UHD, HDR10, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos, subject to device and internet capabilities, in listed markets. |
Max’s listed US prices and plan features come from its official plans and prices page. Prices and features may vary by provider and can change, so treat these as the figures published on that page, not a guarantee of the amount a particular subscriber will pay. Check the checkout screen for the current price, billing period, taxes, and any provider-specific terms before purchasing.
Paramount+’s market-specific feature descriptions come from its official plan information. The US pricing and comparable US plan terms are not established there. If you are in the US, use the current offer shown to you at signup rather than importing a plan name or feature from Australia, Europe, the UK, or Latin America.
Think of the table as a snapshot of official information, not a universal plan menu. Even where a tier name is the same, the included features may not be. Paramount+’s page, for example, groups availability by country and describes features for particular markets; it does not establish that every market has all three plans. Check which tiers are offered to your account and what each includes before making a comparison.
How to choose a plan for your household
Count the people who will stream at once
On Max’s listed US plans, Basic with Ads and Standard both allow two simultaneous streams; Premium allows four. That distinction matters if several people regularly watch at the same time. Choose based on actual concurrent use, not the number of profiles or people in the household. Paramount+’s cited page lists one stream for Basic with Ads, two for Standard, and four for Premium in the markets it specifies; confirm that the same plan and limits apply in your own country.

To decide whether a higher stream limit matters, think about an ordinary evening: how often are two people watching on different devices, and how often would a third or fourth person join at the same time? A household that usually watches together may not need four concurrent streams. A household that regularly splits across rooms or schedules may value the extra capacity. The stream count is about simultaneous playback, so it is more useful than simply counting household members.

Decide whether downloads are useful
Max lists 30 downloads for Standard and 100 for Premium. The help page notes that limits and availability restrictions apply. If you plan to watch offline, check the app’s download option for the specific title and review the plan’s current restrictions before paying more for a download allowance. The cited Paramount+ plan page lists downloads with Standard in the markets it describes, but does not establish a comparable universal allowance in the material cited here.
Downloads are most relevant if you have a real offline use case, such as watching while traveling or somewhere with unreliable internet. Before upgrading for that reason, check three things: whether your plan includes downloads, whether the specific title can be downloaded, and whether the applicable limits suit your needs. The published Max counts do not mean every title can be downloaded, and the sources here do not provide a single universal Paramount+ download cap for comparison.
Pay for picture and sound formats only if your setup can use them
Max lists 4K UHD and Dolby Atmos with Premium where available. Paramount+ lists 4K UHD, HDR10, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos with Premium in specified markets, subject to device and internet capabilities. A listed format is not a promise that every program plays in that format: the plan, individual title, compatible device, and connection all matter. If your television or audio equipment cannot use the feature, it may not justify moving to a more expensive tier.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor the same reason, do not compare format labels in isolation. “4K UHD” or an audio format can be valuable only if the content supports it and the device, connection, and plan can deliver it. A reader using a Full HD screen, for example, may get little practical benefit from paying more solely for a higher-resolution tier. Check the service’s current details for the title and device rather than assuming every program uses the plan’s maximum format.
Check what “ad-free” does and does not mean
Max’s US plan names distinguish Basic with Ads from Standard and Premium, but the cited plan page should be consulted for current details about ads and content. Paramount+’s international support page describes Standard as ad-free in its listed markets, while also noting that live content can still include ad breaks under some plan descriptions. Do not infer that every live program is interruption-free from an ad-free plan description; read the terms for your market and the type of content you intend to watch.
It is worth separating on-demand viewing from live programming when you compare ad expectations. The cited Paramount+ descriptions warn that live content may still have ad breaks under some plan terms, so “ad-free” should not be read as a guarantee that every kind of stream has no interruptions. For Max, use the plan’s current local description rather than inferring all details from the tier name alone. If ad breaks are a deciding factor, confirm the rule that applies to the specific content you watch.
Compare sports by event, not by broad promise
Max’s US help page says select live sports are included with Standard and Premium. “Select” is important: it is not a claim that Max carries every sport, league, or event. The available official material does not establish that either service is comprehensively superior for sports, or provide a title-by-title rights comparison for every country.

Rights can differ by country and change over time. A plan feature that says it includes select live sports does not answer whether your particular event is included.
Do not use the presence of sports in a plan description as a proxy for the complete sports schedule you need. Check the event, date, and country, and verify that it is included with the tier you plan to buy. If you only care about a handful of fixtures or events, comparing those directly is more reliable than declaring one service the better sports choice in general.

Check compatibility before adding a device
Paramount+ says device access depends on plan and country, and its supported-device information lists Fire TV Stick 4K among supported models. That is a compatibility fact, not a requirement to buy a streaming player. First check whether the television, streaming device, phone, or computer you already own supports the service in your region. Consider buying a player only if your existing equipment cannot run the service you want.
Use Paramount+’s supported-device information to check its listed devices, while confirming regional availability and plan conditions. Check Max’s current compatibility information for your own devices as well; the plan and catalog sources cited here are not a complete device-compatibility matrix for both services.
If you are considering a streaming player, make that a separate compatibility decision rather than treating it as part of the subscription price. A Fire TV Stick 4K is one model Paramount+ lists, but it is only relevant if your current equipment cannot access the service and the device is supported for your market and plan. Neither service’s listed features establish that a particular new device is mandatory.
Compare the real cost, not just the monthly headline
For Max in the US, the published annual prices are lower than paying the listed monthly price for twelve months: Basic with Ads is $99.99 per year versus $119.88 at $9.99 per month; Standard is $169.99 per year versus $203.88 at $16.99 per month; Premium is $209.99 per year versus $251.88 at $20.99 per month. These are calculations from the prices listed on Max’s US page, before any taxes, provider differences, or changes to the offer. An annual plan also commits you for a longer billing period, so the nominal saving is useful only if you expect to keep the service long enough.
Those annual prices work out to about $8.33 per month for Basic with Ads, $14.17 for Standard, and $17.50 for Premium when averaged across twelve months. That is a comparison of the published annual total divided by twelve, not a monthly billing option at those rates. It also assumes the annual plan is available to you at the listed price. If you subscribe through a provider or see a different offer, use the actual checkout terms instead.
The nominal difference between twelve monthly payments and the listed annual price is $19.89 for Basic with Ads, $33.89 for Standard, and $41.89 for Premium. Those savings matter only if you would otherwise pay for all twelve months and are comfortable with the longer commitment. If you expect to watch for only a few months, compare the cost of that shorter period instead of assuming an annual plan is automatically the cheaper choice.

A promotion or provider-billed subscription may have different terms from the service’s directly listed price. For Paramount+ in particular, the cited official page does not provide current US pricing, so check the offer displayed for your country rather than relying on an international plan description.
To compare fairly, use the same time horizon and the plan features your household actually needs. For example, compare a month of Max Standard with the local Paramount+ tier that meets your stream, ad, and download requirements—not a low-priced entry tier on one service against a premium tier on the other. Include the billing period and any provider-specific variation in your notes, and recheck the amount immediately before subscribing because prices and offers can change.

- Choose based on catalog fit when one service has more of the documentaries, films, or series your household has verified in its current catalog.
- Choose based on plan fit when simultaneous streams, offline downloads, ads, or premium playback formats are the deciding factor—and the relevant feature is confirmed for your country and device.
- Choose based on total cost only after comparing the checkout price, billing period, and provider terms for the same period of use.
- Reconsider a long commitment if your must-watch list is short or titles may rotate out before you watch them.
A quick decision worksheet can keep the choice grounded: write down your three to five must-watch titles, the number of people likely to stream simultaneously, whether you need offline viewing, and the highest format your equipment can use. Then check local plan availability and checkout totals for each service. The worksheet does not produce a universal winner; it makes clear which trade-offs matter to your household and which features you would be paying for but not using.

The strongest answer is therefore household-specific: first establish which service has the titles you will watch, then pay for only the plan features you can use. For a US comparison, Max’s published prices provide a useful starting point; Paramount+ requires a current local checkout check because the cited plan page does not establish US prices or terms.
Names and availability can change
Max has published guidance about its transition from the name Max to HBO Max in some contexts. Because service naming and branding can depend on market and date, check the current name and offer shown where you live rather than assuming every country uses the same branding. See Max’s naming-transition information.
That naming history is another reason to rely on the service’s current local signup page and app rather than an older comparison. The name shown to you does not settle which titles, features, or prices are available in your country. The practical checks remain the same: verify the catalog, tier terms, device support, and checkout price at the time you subscribe.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is HBO Max (Max) better than Paramount+?
There is no universal winner in the available evidence. Compare the specific shows and movies you plan to watch in each service’s current local catalog, then compare the plan features and final checkout prices offered in your country.
How much does Max cost in the US?
The cited Max US help page lists Basic with Ads at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year, Standard at $16.99 per month or $169.99 per year, and Premium at $20.99 per month or $209.99 per year. Prices and features can vary by provider and change, so verify the amount at checkout.
How much does Paramount+ cost in the US?
The cited official Paramount+ plan page does not establish current US pricing or a comparable US tier matrix. Check the current offer and terms shown for your location rather than applying prices or features listed for another country.
Which service has more simultaneous streams?
On the cited US Max page, Basic with Ads and Standard allow two simultaneous streams, while Premium allows four. Paramount+’s cited international plan descriptions list one, two, and four streams for Basic with Ads, Standard, and Premium respectively in specified markets. Confirm local terms before comparing.
Can I watch offline, in 4K, or with live sports?
The cited US Max page lists 30 downloads on Standard and 100 on Premium, and lists 4K UHD, Dolby Atmos where available, and select live sports with Premium; select live sports are also included with Standard. Download restrictions and title availability apply. Paramount+’s cited international page lists downloads with Standard and premium formats with Premium in specified markets, subject to device and internet capabilities. Check the specific title, plan, and country.
Do I need a Fire TV Stick 4K to watch Paramount+?
No. Paramount+ lists Fire TV Stick 4K among supported devices, but says access depends on plan and country. First check whether your existing TV, streaming device, phone, or computer is supported in your region; consider a new player only if your current equipment cannot run the service.
The Bottom Line
Choose the service that has the titles you have verified and the local plan whose price and features fit your household. Max’s published US page gives specific prices, stream limits, downloads, formats, and select sports details. The cited Paramount+ page is market-specific and does not establish current US pricing, so check local terms rather than assuming international features apply. Catalogs, rights, devices, and prices can change; confirm them at signup.
