Hazbin Hotel Season 1 Review: A Wild Ride That Mostly Works

Hazbin Hotel season 1 turns a redemption story into a flamboyant musical sprint. Its songs and performances mostly make the crowded, fast-moving ride work.

Hazbin Hotel season 1 is worth watching if you enjoy adult animation that pairs musical spectacle with a sincere, if sometimes rushed, story about redemption. Its eight episodes move quickly through a crowded cast and big tonal swings; the songs and performances give the season its spark, while the compressed storytelling occasionally leaves its character turns short on room to breathe.

What is Hazbin Hotel about?

Charlie, princess of Hell, wants to reduce her kingdom’s overpopulation by helping demons redeem themselves rather than face an annual extermination imposed by angels. She opens a hotel for guests willing to try to prove their souls redeemable. Amazon’s November 28, 2023 announcement describes the premise this way: “Hazbin Hotel follows Charlie, the princess of Hell, as she attempts to rehabilitate demons to peacefully reduce overpopulation in her kingdom.”

That setup gives the show an unusually direct dramatic question: can people change when nearly everyone around them expects them not to? The season’s strongest emotional moments come when Charlie’s optimism meets resistance from people who have reason to distrust it. The idea has traction, though the show is more interested in flamboyant conflict and comic escalation than in making rehabilitation feel like a carefully worked-out process.

Does season 1 mostly work?

Mostly, yes. The season’s energy, distinctive character designs, expressive performances, and original songs make its crowded approach entertaining. The downside is that eight brisk episodes must introduce a sizable ensemble, establish Hell’s rules, build relationships, and set up a looming catastrophe. Some scenes land as sharp character beats; others feel like they are hurrying toward the next reveal or number before their implications can settle.

The critical response has also been favorable: Rotten Tomatoes’ season page described it as “a surprisingly effective blend of a compelling story, fascinatingly eccentric characters, wonderful designs, and fantastic music.” That is an attributed description on the aggregator’s page, not a claim from a single named critic.

How do the episodes handle the characters and pacing?

The eight-episode run gives the show a clear forward pull, but not every character receives equal space. Charlie’s hope is the season’s organizing force, and her determination helps the disparate personalities feel connected to a common goal. The surrounding ensemble supplies much of the comedy and friction, but with so many introductions and subplots, some relationships register more as vivid sketches than fully developed arcs.

The episode order moves from the opening “Overture” through “Radio Killed the Video Star,” “Scrambled Eggs,” “Masquerade,” “Dad Beat Dad,” “Welcome to Heaven,” and “Hello Rosie!” before concluding with “The Show Must Go On.” That sequence builds toward the season’s central conflict, though the short, fast-moving structure can make important emotional shifts feel abrupt. The finale brings the season’s setup to a satisfying confrontation and gives its spectacle a purpose, even if it cannot resolve every character question with the same depth.

Do the songs advance the story?

Often, and that is a major reason the excess works. The songs are not simply pauses for musical display: they reveal how characters see themselves, sharpen rivalries, and turn arguments into theatrical set pieces. Their boldness suits a world built on heightened personalities and moral extremes. At the same time, the frequency and speed of the musical turns contribute to the sense that the season is always moving. A number can make a scene memorable without giving the surrounding relationship much additional time to develop.

How many episodes are in season 1, and where can you watch it?

Season 1 has eight episodes. Amazon announced its US Prime Video premiere for January 19, 2024. The Prime Video listing has surfaced episode dates of January 18, January 25, and February 1 in storefront presentation; those localized dates do not contradict the US announcement.

Hazbin Hotel is listed on Prime Video, and A24 also points viewers to that platform. Availability can vary by country and change over time, so check the current listing in your region. The series was created by Vivienne Medrano, who Amazon says served as executive producer and director of all episodes. A24 and FOX Entertainment’s Bento Box Entertainment are named production entities.

Who is likely to enjoy it?

It is a good fit for viewers who want adult animation with theatrical songs, vivid designs, irreverent humor, and a heartfelt central idea beneath the chaos. It may be less satisfying if you prefer a measured pace, a small cast, or character arcs that unfold gradually before the story turns to its next big set piece. The season’s best quality and its chief limitation come from the same source: it commits to doing a lot, very quickly.
