Hayden Christensen’s work as Anakin Skywalker in Ahsoka’s “Part Five: Shadow Warrior” makes a strong case for his best Star Wars performance. In one episode, he moves from the familiar warmth of Ahsoka’s former teacher to the intensity of a wartime fighter and the menace of the man becoming Darth Vader. The achievement is not that he simply returns as a fan-favorite character: it is that each version of Anakin serves Ahsoka’s reckoning with their shared past. Whether it is his best appearance remains a matter of what a viewer values in a performance.
Why “Shadow Warrior” gives Christensen a distinctive role
Ahsoka premiered on Disney+ in August 2023. Set after the fall of the Empire, the series follows Ahsoka Tano as she investigates a new threat. Anakin, her former master from the Clone Wars, enters the story in season one’s fifth episode, “Part Five: Shadow Warrior.” Dave Filoni wrote and directed the episode, according to StarWars.com’s episode guide.

The episode follows a cliffhanger that leaves Ahsoka apparently in the World Between Worlds, where she comes face-to-face with Anakin. The setting connects their encounter to Star Wars Rebels: the official StarWars.com Databank entry describes the realm as pathways and doors between time and space, and lists appearances in both Rebels and Ahsoka.
That meeting is built around more than recognition. StarWars.com’s Part Five analysis frames the episode as an exploration of the pair’s relationship, teaching, and sacrifice. The story gives Christensen room to draw on the ease of their old teacher–student dynamic while letting the encounter grow more dangerous.

- Set after the fall of the Empire, Star Wars: Ahsoka follows the former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano as she investigates an emerging thereat to a vulnerable galaxy.
Three Anakin modes, one performance
The teacher Ahsoka remembers
At first, Anakin and Ahsoka fall back into familiar banter. Anakin calls her “Snips,” and one of his lines—“One is never too old to learn, Snips”—carries the cadence of a teacher who still knows how to needle his former student. The official episode analysis highlights how naturally their rapport resumes. Christensen’s performance makes that history legible through conversational ease, rather than relying only on exposition about what they once meant to each other.
The warrior forged in the Clone Wars
The encounter moves through moments from their shared past, including Clone Wars-era fighting and the Siege of Mandalore. Time’s recap of the episode traces that progression. In these scenes, Anakin is not simply a memory being replayed: his confidence and combativeness show the formidable mentor Ahsoka once followed into battle.
Rank #2
That history matters because Ahsoka’s past with Anakin is complicated. She left the Jedi Order after being falsely accused of a bombing, then eventually returned to the story in the Siege of Mandalore arc. StarWars.com’s retrospective on Ahsoka’s story recounts those turns. “Shadow Warrior” draws on that shared experience without treating their reunion as a detached nostalgia sequence.
The shadow of Vader
As the episode advances, Anakin increasingly reflects the transformation toward Darth Vader. The shift changes the emotional terms of the encounter: the teacher Ahsoka remembers and the threat she knows he became occupy the same space. Christensen’s performance makes that contrast the episode’s central tension. He does not need to play the reunion as a simple return to the past; the danger in Anakin’s later presence forces Ahsoka—and the viewer—to confront what that past led to.

The strongest argument for calling this Christensen’s best Star Wars performance is its range in service of another character’s present crisis. “Shadow Warrior” asks him to make Anakin feel at once like Ahsoka’s familiar mentor, a leader shaped by war, and a figure associated with an unbearable fall. The reunion tests Ahsoka’s understanding of her former master and of her own history with him; it is not only a cameo designed to reward recognition.
That emotional focus is apparent in the actors’ own descriptions of the scene. In Entertainment Tonight’s interview coverage, Rosario Dawson, who plays Ahsoka, said, “It’s really, really powerful for Ahsoka, to see her guard come down.” Christensen said of joining the series, “When I got the phone call to talk about being part of the Ahsoka project, I was thrilled.” The interview also notes his interest in bringing fan-favorite moments from The Clone Wars and Rebels to life.
Rank #4
Is it his best Star Wars performance?
That verdict depends on the standard. If the priority is a performance that brings several versions of Anakin into one character encounter, builds on a convincing sense of shared history, and deepens Ahsoka’s emotional arc, “Shadow Warrior” is an especially persuasive choice. Those are critical criteria, not an objective ranking. The available sources do not establish a published ranking or consensus that makes “best ever” a settled fact, and the claim does not require dismissing Christensen’s work in the prequel films.
For viewers unfamiliar with the animated series, the episode’s core relationship is still clear: Anakin trained Ahsoka during the Clone Wars, and the reunion draws its force from both their affection and the tragedy of what followed. Watching The Clone Wars or Rebels can add context, but the episode’s emotional question is legible on its own: how does Ahsoka carry the lessons of a teacher whose legacy also includes Vader?
