Studio Ghibli’s New Year post for 2026 included an illustration credited to Miyazaki and a photo of him with producer Toshio Suzuki, but the post did not identify the illustration as concept art or announce a project. It said the two were discussing “something” about 2026.
What did Studio Ghibli actually reveal?
In a January 1, 2026 New Year message, Studio Ghibli shared a photograph of Miyazaki and Suzuki at Studio 1, taken on December 18, 2025. The post said they were discussing something about 2026, without naming a film, short, or other project. It also featured an illustration explicitly credited to Miyazaki. Studio Ghibli’s New Year’s greetings do not say the illustration is connected to the discussion or to a new production.

That distinction matters: an artist-credit and a meeting photo establish that Miyazaki made the illustration and met Suzuki, not that the image is a first look at an upcoming film. The official post does not identify what the illustration depicts or what the two were discussing.
Is Hayao Miyazaki making a new film?
The official material cited here does not confirm a new Miyazaki film or release any images identified as belonging to one. The latest feature by him listed in Studio Ghibli’s catalog is The Boy and the Heron, released in Japan on July 14, 2023. The film’s official page identifies it as a Hayao Miyazaki work.

That is not proof that no future project will happen. In an August 19, 2026 report, GamesRadar+ quoted Toho CEO Hiroyasu Matsuoka describing Ghibli project discussions as casual and unpredictable: “We are discussing many projects on a very casual level,” he said, noting that some ideas become real quickly while others do not progress. He also said Toho awaits and welcomes a new Ghibli project but cannot ask or control the studio. GamesRadar+’s report does not identify a confirmed new Miyazaki film or released images for one.
What is A Night in the Valley of Witches?
Studio Ghibli’s 2026 short, A Night in the Valley of Witches, is a separate project—not a Hayao Miyazaki film. Ghibli Park identifies Goro Miyazaki and Akihiko Yamashita as its directors and says it premiered at the Grand Warehouse on July 8, 2026. The park describes it as the first original short made specifically for Ghibli Park. Ghibli Park’s screening announcement provides no basis for attributing the short to Hayao Miyazaki.

How to read the “first images” claim
The available official announcements establish two things: a Miyazaki-credited New Year illustration and an unidentified discussion about 2026. They do not connect either to a new film. Separately, the 2026 Ghibli Park short has different directors. Studio Ghibli’s news index, reviewed through September 25, 2026, lists the short and other announcements but does not establish a new Hayao Miyazaki film. Studio Ghibli’s news page is the place to check for an official project announcement.
