Hasan Piker said Customs and Border Protection officers questioned him after he returned from Paris to Chicago O’Hare on May 11, 2025. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed he was referred for further inspection, called it a routine and lawful process, denied that his political beliefs triggered it, and said he was promptly released. The cited reporting does not independently establish what officers asked or why they referred him.
What happened at O’Hare?
In reports published May 12 and 13, 2025, Piker said he was taken aside after arriving at Chicago O’Hare from Paris on Sunday, May 11. The Washington Post reported that he is a U.S. citizen and was enrolled in Global Entry. The Associated Press described the encounter as an inspection and reported that federal officials declined to provide further details about what prompted it.
Piker described himself as detained and questioned. The reporting describes a referral for inspection and his release; it does not report a criminal arrest or charge. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said he was released promptly after the inspection.
What did Piker say officers asked?
Piker said the questioning lasted roughly two hours and concerned his work, political affiliation, views on President Donald Trump, and alleged connections to terrorist groups. CBS Chicago reported his account that agents asked about Trump, Israel, Hamas, and the Houthis. These are Piker’s descriptions of a private interaction; the cited reports do not independently verify the questions or the duration.

How to read the competing accounts
The central distinction is between Piker’s account of the questioning and his interpretation of its motive, and DHS’s account of a routine inspection with no political motivation. Neither the specific questions nor the reason for the referral is independently established in the cited coverage. A careful description is that Piker said he was detained and questioned, DHS confirmed a referral for inspection and said he was promptly released, and the motive remains unresolved in the public reporting cited here.
