Johnny Depp’s Academy Award nominations
The Academy’s ceremony records list Depp as a lead-actor nominee in 2004, 2005 and 2008. Each record names a different winner:
| Ceremony year | Nominated film | Winner | Winning film |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2004 | Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl | Sean Penn | Mystic River |
| 2005 | Finding Neverland | Jamie Foxx | Ray |
| 2008 | Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street | Daniel Day-Lewis | There Will Be Blood |
Sources: the Academy’s 2004 ceremony record, 2005 ceremony record and 2008 ceremony record.
Why the ceremony years differ from the film years
Oscar ceremony years are not always the same as the year the nominated films were released. The Academy says its 2004 ceremony honored films released in 2003, while its 2005 ceremony honored films released in 2004. The dates in the table identify ceremony years, not release years.
