Harlan Coben’s Lazarus gives the cold-case mystery an unusual engine: Joel Lazarus’s visions and encounters with the dead appear to point toward real crimes. That premise makes the six-episode Prime Video series feel different from a conventional whodunnit, though critics disagree on whether its supernatural and investigative strands come together convincingly.
What is Harlan Coben’s Lazarus about?
After his father dies, Joel Lazarus returns home and begins experiencing inexplicable phenomena. They lead him toward cold cases connected to the unsolved murder of his sister, who was killed 25 years earlier. The mystery therefore links a family death in the present, Joel’s sister’s long-unsolved case and apparent messages from the dead.
The supernatural element is part of the story, not merely an eerie backdrop: Joel’s experiences are tied to clues and insights in the investigation. The series leaves room for ambiguity about what those experiences mean, so it is best approached without expecting a purely evidence-based police procedural.
Does the supernatural premise make the mystery feel fresh?
It gives the show a distinctive starting point. Instead of relying only on interviews, physical evidence and detective work, Lazarus asks whether uncanny encounters can help unlock a murder mystery. That combination of family trauma, eerie atmosphere and cold-case investigation is the clearest reason to try it if familiar whodunnits are starting to feel predictable.

Whether the combination works is another question. The reviews are divided: TechRadar’s Jasmine Valentine praises the ambition, cast and twists, but says the supernatural and whodunnit elements do not fully cohere and that the narrative can become confusing. Lucy Mangan’s Guardian review is more critical, faulting the pacing, repetition, tension and plausibility. The same device that distinguishes the show may strike some viewers as an intriguing change of pace and others as an implausible shortcut.
Is Harlan Coben’s Lazarus worth watching?
It is a reasonable pick for viewers who enjoy twist-heavy crime stories and are open to a supernatural dimension. The draw is less a promise of a tightly realistic investigation than the collision of an unresolved family murder with unsettling experiences that may offer clues. If you want a mystery whose rules remain grounded in conventional evidence, the premise and critical reservations may give you pause.
The disagreement is reflected in Rotten Tomatoes’ snapshot: when accessed in 2026, the series had a 44% Tomatometer from 27 reviews and a 47% Popcornmeter from more than 100 ratings. Those are changing scores, not fixed measures of quality. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus describes emotional performances and a spooky mood, but criticizes clunky dialogue and increasingly preposterous plotting.
Is the series based on a Harlan Coben book?
No. Amazon describes Harlan Coben’s Lazarus as based on an original story by Coben, made in collaboration with Danny Brocklehurst. The Guardian also describes it as a story created from scratch, rather than an adaptation of a Coben novel.
