What is Haq about?
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) synopsis describes a story set in 1980s India: Shazia Bano takes her husband to court after he abandons her and their children, setting off a wider debate over faith, women’s rights and justice. The CBFC certified the Hindi film UA 13+ through its Mumbai regional office on 28 October 2025. Is Haq based on the Shah Bano case?
It is inspired by the case, but that does not make it a faithful biopic. The CBFC synopsis names Shazia Bano as the central character and links the story to the landmark judgment. In pre-release court reporting, the producers’ position was that the film was a fictional adaptation of Bano: Bharat Ki Beti, inspired by the Supreme Court decision. What did the Supreme Court decide in the Shah Bano case?
On 23 April 1985, the Supreme Court of India decided Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum. Shah Bano had sought maintenance under Section 125 of the Code of Criminal Procedure after her divorce. The Court held that a divorced woman unable to maintain herself could seek maintenance under that provision, and that Section 125 applied regardless of the parties’ religion. “Section 125 is truly secular in character.”
The judgment records that Shah Bano filed her maintenance petition in April 1978. The Supreme Court dismissed Ahmed Khan’s appeal, leaving the High Court’s maintenance order in place. Those are facts from the court record, not a guide to what the film depicts. Supreme Court judgment

Before the scheduled release, Siddiqua Begum Khan, Shah Bano’s daughter and legal heir, asked a court to restrain the film. Reports said she argued that it used private and family details without consent. The producers, by contrast, described it as a fictional adaptation inspired by the judgment. The Madhya Pradesh High Court dismissed the petition before the planned release. India Today reported that the court cited delay, lack of merit and CBFC certification. In a passage quoted by NDTV, the court said: “The film is not stated to be based purely upon the decision in the case of Shah Bano; hence, if it contains any personal or matrimonial details for the purpose of dramatisation and picturization, nothing wrong can be found in the same.” India Today report NDTV report quoting the court
The dismissal resolved the request to block the film’s release. It did not establish that every dramatized detail was historically accurate.
