Hans Zimmer & Friends: Diamond in the Desert has the makings of a cinephile’s catalogue-spanning concert event: live orchestral performances of music from Dune, Gladiator, Interstellar and The Lion King, alongside conversations with some of the artists and filmmakers who have worked with Zimmer. The “Eras Tour for Letterboxd users” comparison fits the promise of recognition and scale, but this is not a pop star’s single-artist tour narrative. It is a film about a composer’s body of work, and its central question is whether conversation can deepen the performance without interrupting its momentum.
A concert film with a documentary conversation running through it
Directed by Paul Dugdale, the 158-minute film combines performance footage with interviews about creative process and collaboration. Zimmer’s band and an orchestra perform at Dubai’s Coca-Cola Arena and at locations including the Arabian Desert and the Burj Al Arab. That mix gives the film two distinct attractions: hearing familiar themes in a live setting, and seeing the work situated in the relationships behind it.
The official film site describes the repertoire as including music from Dune, Gladiator, Interstellar and The Lion King. Its stated premise is broad rather than tied to one score or film, which is why the Eras Tour analogy works as a framing device: recognition across a career is part of the draw. But Zimmer’s film music is not a sequence of chapters in one artist’s personal tour story. The collaborators and the projects that brought them together are part of the subject.
What the conversations add
The interview roster includes Billie Eilish, Finneas, Sir Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve, Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Pharrell Williams and Johnny Marr, among others. The credits also identify performers including Lisa Gerrard, Lebo M., Loire Cotler, Judith Sephuma, Tina Guo, Guthrie Govan and Nick Glennie-Smith. Those names signal how many creative voices orbit the music, though a roster alone cannot tell you how much time each person receives or how the conversations are edited into the performances.

That balance is the film’s defining promise and its main risk. For viewers who want context around how a score is made and who helped shape it, interviews can give a familiar theme a second dimension. For anyone chiefly seeking an uninterrupted concert experience, each return to conversation may feel like a pause. One critic’s response captures both possibilities: Movie Marker’s Nicola Austin called the interviews insightful and the performance immersive, while wishing the theatrical sound quality had been better. That is one reviewer’s reaction, not a measure of critical consensus.
How it compares with a pop-tour film
The comparison to Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour is useful only up to a point. Both frames invite viewers to anticipate scale and the pleasure of recognizing material across a large catalogue. Here, however, the organizing idea is a composer’s screen legacy and his collaborations, not a single performer’s tour-era narrative. The live orchestra, varied performance locations and interview segments point toward a hybrid concert documentary rather than a straight concert capture.

For Letterboxd users, that hybrid may be the appeal: the film treats film scores as a body of work worth encountering together, while bringing some of the filmmakers and performers connected to them into the frame. Whether it sustains the energy of a performance film depends on your appetite for the conversation as well as the music. The available facts establish that both are present; they do not establish a shot-by-shot comparison with other concert films.

Is it worth watching?
If you enjoy Zimmer’s scores and want a concert experience with context from collaborators, the film’s combination of live performance and conversation is a strong fit. If you are looking for an uninterrupted concert recording, the interview component may be less appealing. The theatrical scale is part of its presentation, while the home edition offers several audio-format options for compatible equipment; the critic’s note about sound is a reminder that the experience can depend on the presentation as well as the repertoire.
