What does the 100% Rotten Tomatoes score mean?
As displayed by Rotten Tomatoes on October 7, 2026, Hamburger Hill has a 100% Tomatometer from 12 critic reviews. The percentage is an aggregate of the reviews counted by the site; it is not a rating out of 100 for the film, nor proof of universal approval. Rotten Tomatoes shows a separate 73% Popcornmeter from 25,000+ audience ratings. Both figures are snapshots and may change as the site’s review and rating totals change.
The critic score is not the only evidence of how the film has been received. Rotten Tomatoes lists Vincent Canby of The New York Times describing it as “A well-made Vietnam War film that narrows its attention to the men of a single platoon in a specific operation.” The page dates that review May 20, 2003; that is the date Rotten Tomatoes displays, not necessarily the review’s original publication date. It also lists Derek Adams of Time Out, dated June 24, 2006, noting “a couple of rocky moments” while praising the large cast’s convincing depiction of the soldiers’ ordeal.

- Though the anti-war sentiments of Hamburger Hill come through loud and clear, the film is squarely on the side of those courageous, much-maligned Americans who fought and died in Vietnam. Based on a true incident, the story takes place in 1969, as the 101st Airborne Division confronts the Vietcong in a bloody battle over Hill 937 (aka "Hamburger Hill") in the Ashua Valley. During the next 10 days,
What is Hamburger Hill about?
The story follows an infantry squad through ten days in May 1969 as it tries to take a hill during the Vietnam War. Its focus is deliberately close: the men in one squad, the combat operation, and the pressures that shape their relationships. The synopsis also identifies the effects of the antiwar movement on morale and racial hostility between white and Black soldiers. Doc, the squad’s medic, mediates some of those tensions.
That combination gives the film more to address than the battlefield objective alone. Its central frame is the squad’s effort to survive and function together while facing combat and disagreements within its ranks. The available listings establish that story outline; they do not provide a basis for adding specific casualty figures or treating the film as a complete history of the real battle.

How prominent is Don Cheadle in the film?
Cheadle plays Pvt. Johnny Washburn. His casting is a notable early film credit, but the sources identify the character rather than positioning Washburn as the sole lead: the story is described as following an infantry squad. The film’s ensemble setting is part of its focus on the group’s experience rather than one soldier’s perspective alone.

The 100% Tomatometer makes Hamburger Hill notable, but the number is best read alongside its small critic-review sample and the separate audience score. The premise may appeal to viewers seeking a Vietnam War film centered on a single squad and its internal tensions, rather than a broad survey of the war. Whether its combat scenes or dramatic approach work for an individual viewer is a matter of taste; the aggregate score cannot settle that question.
